Decided to start a new thread for the topic... Word is Briggs is now using 4700 CDI coils in lieu of 4350 on new stock engines.... carry on.

Did they do anything to the motor or just put new coils on?

Seems only thing will help is with mods. Theirs no way a stock motor will even turn any where close to that.

May be able to purchase oem coils for less than the aftermarkets if this is a standard stock item now

Post subject:  Re: New Briggs CDI 4700rpm

So now Briggs feels like their engine can turn 4700 safely. I wonder how long the crap 2-piece valves will hold up at 4700.
Plus, I haven't seen a stock motor b able to turn up 4350 on even the smallest boat. I could only get 4100 on my 15 foot boat.

I got the 4700 CID coils from boat doctor for $219 a set. Not sure what the oem coils cost, but it can't b much less.

I'm pretty sure Briggs actually makes the 4700 coils that everybody sells

Post subject:  Re: New Briggs CDI 4700rpm

Yes, MB said the ones they sell are Briggs. These are probably the same ones that are coming stock on all new motors and they're selling them for a buck fifty now...

Post subject:  Re: New Briggs CDI 4700rpm

This is true,,,i just seen my cousins new PD turn 4650 easily out of gear..

Now,,it still only turns normall in water, but it makes for one less thing to buy when modding....

Now,,,,the question is....WHY?????

My theory is that 4350 will not be enough when they fuel inject them??? Doesnt just the "mikey-runey" carb give them roughly 200rpms??? Not sure, but thought thats what i was told...If so,,that would easily put a light boat at 4400 rpms on a PD....

Thats my theory,,,Carry on...

I believe this is the type motor that MB developed and specified w/ Briggs. I believe the heads are a little different and valve springs are shimmed.

Post subject:  Re: New Briggs with CDI 4700rpm coils stock

Bug called MB and they said they are putting them in all the motors on hand and the new ones already have them. A stock motor will not reach that in the water unless it is on a very light boat.

Somebody said KP replaced a couple new tiny tachs reportedly turning high rpms before they realized the motors were coming with higher coils...

I'm not confirming it myself, but it appears to be true...

Post subject:  Re: New Briggs CDI 4700rpm

I was running 2011 35 cdi on a 2011 1645 excel and it in the sweet spot stayed on the rev limiter at 4350 rpm with my usual hunting load and 1 person. Before i sold it had considered changing the gearing to drop the rpm and get some more speed. The coils just didnt get out fast enough but i had plans of running them with shimmed valve springs. Was told by ***** that 4700 would not hurt the stock bottom end of the briggs.

Damn mine will only hit 5k?stupid ass rev limiter

Author:  sas8819 [ Thu Dec 13, 2012 9:17 am ]
Post subject:  Re: New Briggs CDI 4700rpm

Not really, the only time I'd hit the rev limiter was with a worn out wheel and very shallow water.Sending it out over the winter to get the heads, carb and exhaust done. Probably beable to hit the rev limiter a little more after that.
