So in my last thread I was told to adjust the governor up to 4300 rpms @ WOT, in neutral out of water.

I looked up the Subaru Robin manual for the EH72. linked below


It shows the governor shaft and lever. I have loosened the nut facing the rear of the motor(lock bolt). I have a t-handled wrench on the hex stud coming off the top of the lever(governor shaft). I am turning in the right direction the manual indicates. I've put a bit of force on it and no movement. I'm really not wanting to break something off on a motor I just dropped this much coin on.

Any help or even a link to better instruction would be VERY appreciated.

Thus far best speed was 25.5. My max RPMS at WOT in the water are 3730-3750. WOT in neutral, not water are 4030. I'm just trying to get this motor where it should be.

I'm cool with the speed if that all the boat has, but with all the similar boats running high 20s, low 30's I just want to clear any doubts. I want to know I'm getting everything I should out of the motor.

Those numbers for in the water are low. I can get mine over 4000 in the water. I didn't have to tinker with the governor too much, but i did not have any resistance like you are talking about.

So do I need to just put more ass on it, or is it max'd out. I have a hard time thinking its max'd out with the low speeds im getting. I just don't wanna snap the dang thing off.

So cut'em, all you did was loosen the lock bolt, then turn the governor shaft and retighten lock bolt?

Perkins, the bolt you are putting your hex t handle on is the actual governor. It's designed to govern the motor when turned and tightened all the way counterclockwise. You need to tie the throttle lever wide open then move the gov lever forward while keeping the counterclockwise pressure on the actual top of the gov shaft going into the motor (the 7 mm you were trying to turn). Move the lever forward a little and retighten the 10 mm nut. Try it out and see where your rpms are. I have mine at around 4200 wot out of the water. You may have to move it a couple times to get it where it needs to be. Hope this helps.

LOL now I got it set at 4170-4200, the throttle keeps sticking and you have to pop the gas control. It is also idling super high. two steps forward one step back. I'll keep playing with it. thanks for the help bud, I'm glad I didn't go Hercules on what I thought was supposed to be turning.

Make sure the governor has no play at all going counterclockwise. If it does it will idle high. Also loosen the nut just a smidge on top of the cable linkage and douche it up with some wd40 or something.

IT sounded mean over 4000rpms, looking at the hp curve I was a few shy of max @ 3700. Should be fun on my next outing, hopefully I can come back with some nice 25GTR numbers.

Also tweak the gov arm where its just at the 4150-4200 when at full throttle. What I mean is don't move it up too much because it ain't doing nothing anyway and it can mess with your other linkage settings.

I couldn't help it!!! All in good fun. I am sure there is some more that are keeping it quiet.

I would have been content with that as well. Got a good builder that gave it just enough to get there.

I fought and fought after getting rpms to 4150-4200 to try and get the idle right. It was horrible, I finally got it to settle out, but now my max rpms are 4080-4110. I got the red ass messing with it and quit once I got it to an acceptable idle. I dont see why this is giving me so much crap being its a brand new setup. I really want to see the full potential but I couldnt find that fine line of having both. I might try again during the week.

For now I got some beer and a grill to start tinkering with!

Mine tops out at 4110-4120rpms

I think i know what the problem is. look at the hand throttle on side of engine its probably hitting your valve cover at idle after you made governor adjustments. May take a lil tweakin.
