I'm new to this mud motor thing and have 35 GTR with 21 hours on it. When you start to give a little throttle to get on plane it seems to make a knocking noise. Once up on plane at part throttle it sounds fine and runs smooth. At wide open throttle it makes a grinding noise and you can feel a vibration in the tiller handle also. Do these symtoms sound normal to a GTR. It is on a 18'x48" fiberglass hull, with a brand new 12x10 powertech prop. It will only turn 3500 rpm WTFO. Out of the water it will turn 4150 rpm. Even though the belt was not loose, I shimmed it anyway just to see if it would make a difference. Results were the same. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

Sounds about right to me... At least from my experience and I'm new to Gator-Tail and surface drives all together... I turn 3970 with my worn out prop trimmed up just right in deep water. |

Are you running cheap gas? Do you have a water filter? |

I run 89 Chevron gas... I think I know what he is talking about here... The motor in deep water when you barely get on the throttle knocks slightly and then ceases as you power through to plane... I Just have a gas filter (inline) no water fuel.... |

DMC, Reading your other posts - you already know about the three possible settings or holes to run the GTR in - and it is on that nice Cat-5 hull which is pretty light - so it should be running 28 to 30 mph and more like 3700rpm if everything is setup right..... Prop is new so you would not think it was out of balance.... No ideas - but I figured if I posted "anything" the GTR A+ team would take notice and come and help you out.... Good Luck - I like that Cat-5 hull - Sweet.... |

My experience with a knocking on my motor was when I first put the hull in the water. I had an air leak at the bubble. Out of the water the engine would run smooth, but when in the water it would knock and couldnt get abouve 1200 RPMs with a load on the prop. Tightened all my fuel connections and then she ran good. |

Thanks for the replies. I brought the boat to GT this morning for Hoyt to check it out. We took it to the water, and the things I was concerned about really were nothing to be worried about. He answered alot of question I had and gave me some suggestion on the hull to get it to perform better. GT customer service is second to none. I bought this engine used from someone else and they went above and beyond to help me out. Thanks Hoyt. |
