I've searched and read a few comments on installing a separator. Does everyone use them? I understand the pro's but what are the reasons you wouldn't/don't have one? |

I don't have one but only use non ethanol fuel and even then it never sits for more than a couple weeks before it gets ran through or drained into a car. |

I've had one on every motor I've owned. Not sure how much it has helped but if it degrades any performance I'd assume it's too little to notice. Is it suppose to help w/ ethanol? I didn't think a water separator helps with that. |

ethanol or corn squeezins that are blended with fuel seems to absorb the moisture (water) easier than non-ethanol fuels. I notice more rust/corrosion in carbs from ethanol blended fuels on equipment that sits for real long periods of time, my .02 cents. |

Regardless if you run ethanol fuel or not, it would be cheap insurance to run one. |

Is there a specific type or model that is better than another? |

I have them on every boat. I prefer Racor and I use a 120R on my mud boat. If you get contaminated fuel, a Racor can save the day. |

Racor 025-RAC-02 is a nice small one that is good for these small engines. |

One with the bowl that you can drain if you have a decent size tank. I run one with a bowl in my bassboat. I've heard of the standard filter types filling up with enough water to kill the engine. Then you have to take the filter off, pour it out, and reinstall. With the bowl type you can just drain the water out. |

Never run with one, really haven't needed it. I haven't had any problems with ethanol fuel (which is all you can get around here) even when it sits up for a couple of months. I don't have one on my mower either for the same reason. |

I have three boats. Two have water catcher. the two that have them. Seem to run smoother. And start smoother. The one motor that doesn't. seems to start a little rougher. And does not run as smooth. Also time to time before my yearly preventive maintenance. It'll run really ruff and not get full throttle. |

Yea, I have an aluminum tank in my boat so I guess it would be good to install one. Thanks for the input. |

I run the standard kind with the spin on filter. I change it once a year for $6. I have a plastic tank, and run non ethanol gas. I use this as my fuel filter also. Running the water seperate and a fuel filter is probably a little hard on the fuel pump. The water separator filter has the same microns as the fuel filter. I've never had any issues. |

Never needed one and feel they are just another item that could cause issues with fuel delivery especially once the temps drop below 32 at night during duck season |

I surely wouldn't hurt to have.. I also add stabil in everything I own too and don't have any of the problems my buddies do with starting and idling.. ( boats, atvs, mowers, chainsaws, side by side.) |

I know these are big lawn mower motors, but if water or trash shuts you down while cutting grass, at least your at home or near your truck. I prefer a little insurance and using a water seperator is CHEAP insurance. I say use one and don't look back. |

For those of you who have forward mounted gas tanks are you mounting the water separator closer to the tank or back closer to the transom? |

Mine is mounted on the transom under the motor. Works great |

I have always used one on my boats so I will be using one for the new prodigy. All my previous hulls had the duel tank in the rear so I always mounted on the transom. The new boat has a forward mounted tank so I was just curious where everyone else was mounting there's. |

Just don't buy a cheap Sierra spin-on. It will rust on the inside before a cat can lick his ass. Yamaha element, no problems. |

Never had one and not getting one now. I little water every now and then will clean the carbon right out. One of Dales kids sprayed water into the exhaust until it filled the cylinders. (figured this out after we wondered how in the hell it was full of water) Took the plugs out and spun it a few times, drained the oil, put new oil in, fired it up and hauled ass. Ran it all day long at the poker run. Yall are other thinking it. |

Do you have have a water separator on your lawnmower? There is basically no difference. The little bit of water that gets in there is burned through the engine. I have also had aluminum fuel tank in my boat for over 30 years. Lots are scared of them because of condensation, I have never had an issue with water in my fuel or better yet enough water in my fuel that my engine ran like crap. These are not high tech automobile engines, there F'n lawnmower engine used in a different platform. Don't make it complicated. Oh and another thing, I have also seen where a water separator, if not checked and maintained, will collect water as it should, but will also fill and slug water into the engine. So just because you have one, doesn't mean anything if not maintained. |

Never used one. I’ve never had any issues related to water in the fuel. I figure it’s one more place to potentially get air in the fuel system. I have a shitty EPA plastic tank. |

After having water and trash problems in every boat I have owned, I now use one. The last two boats have never had an issue with the Separator. Too cheap not to get one. Change the filter once per year and always find something I would not want in my engine. |

FYI my original post was from 2015. I never did install the water separator and have had zero issues pertaining to water in the fuel. |

if I have a problem, I look at the fuel filter that comes with the motor. been fine on my pd since 2003 or so. airboat and bayboat, yes. lawnmower engine mudboat, no. |
