 27hp PD Low power
i have a 27hp pd Kohler powerhead that I have been experiencing some very strange issues with. Yesterday evening i took me and my boy on a hunt and motor started up great never faulters with that launched but i did notice that is was a true dog out of the hole took about 3 to 5 min to get on plane. I run this on a 1548 boat and and this thing should run really good. i did get at least 24mph when i first got it. and it was pretty quick out of the hole. now once i got in smooth water the boat planed better but was still a dog. now i was running in a channel that had smooth water and was not very deep. when i exited the channel and turned into the wind with about 6 to 12 in waves the boat completely dogged out and would barely get 2900 rpm it just could not take the load. only when i turned with the wind would it build power or when i was in shallow smooth water. Now i have noticed gas coming from the right side cylinder when the motor is cold. and i do get spark on the cylinder verified with a spark tester. i changed the spark plugs and have changed the gas the next step i am going to take is overhauling the carb my guess is that possibly the coil is not firing hot enough and when it gets overloaded with gas it floods out the cylinder and causes it to run rough and looses power. I hope i am going int he right direction here. Any thoughts or comments on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Matt

 Re: 27hp PD Low power
It has the familiar symptons of a gunky carb... Keep us posted.

 Re: 27hp PD Low power
Here is an update. I overhauled the carb but the kit was rather lean on oparts its a fixed jet nikki carb and the only parts was a needle and float and some gaskets. but i did blow out the jets with carb cleaner and replaced some leaking gaskets. what i found out was interesting to say the least. just sitting on the trailer the motor gained about 100 rpm at WOT with no load. Also the govener linkage was on the very bottom hole of the mech gov and i move this up to the next one i am thinking that this may have been the root of my problems. possbily the governor was not opening up the throttle all the way. when a huge demand was placed on it. and i did adjust the idle screw a tad to bring it up for cold weather ops. Re: 27hp PD Low power
Motor only has about 170 hrs on it unless there is a blown head gasket or something like that.

Have you checked your plugs since you changed them?

 Re: 27hp PD Low power
No i havent checked them since i put the new plugs in. Today went out hunting and ran the engine. when i got into sheltered shallow water i picked up about 400rpms and the boat ran great. but in open water with chop she ran like a dog is it that its not producing enough torque or is the motor just being over loaded.
