I have the stage II carb and after market air filter on a 1854 PD with a 36PD. I ran with and without the air filter. I did not see any MPH gain with just the carb, but I did see definite change in load carrying ability.
The next day I put on the air filter, and I must say the engine acted like it was a completely different set up. The throttle response was pretty amazing, and I picked up another 2 mph.

I would definitely recommend the air filter with any carb set up.

The air filter & adapter added to my stock carb gave me around 100 more rpms. That along with the MM exhaust gave me about 150 together. Better throttle response also. More air is more better for me.

Post subject:  Re: gecker

Don't have any of the adapter but its a simple aluminum plate that bolts up to the carb. If you plan to use the stock bolts you will need 4 spacers that were not provided. Can get them at Lowes. If you look on the rear of the rectangular plate that the stud holding filter assy on, there are 4 spacers on the back that create the stabdoff for airflow. They are held onto the plate with epoxy and you can snap them off.
