Post 24hp hoda need help
I have a 24 hp honda that runs fine when there is no load, but as soon as the prop goes in the water it boggs down big time. I say runs fine you have to choke it everytime to crank it even if it is warm. The coil was bad so we replaced the one that wasnt gettin fire. that didnt fix the problem. It seems to be getting fuel the carb was clean and it has a brand new fuel pump as well. we looked at the valves and adjusted them to the right specs. we even looked at the heads and everything appeard to be ok. has anybody had this sort of a problem and does anybody have any ideas?

have you got a new prop? have you run this boat in water before? is this a homemade motor?

kinda dumb questions, and i'm sure you thought of the prop being oversized, right? if not the prop, this may be complicated

Give us some info on the events leading up to this issue. Have you ever run this motor? If so how long ago? More info would help the diagnostic process.

I had the same problem with ma 24 honda on ma longtail. Try taking a look at your timing key it could have a nick in it. I had to change it on mine. They mess up if u hit a log or something hard and it dints the key. they are made out aluminium, but you can buy one made out of harden steel. I have to choke mine everytime to start it. Ive had alot of problems with ma honda they are shitty.

Did you ever figure it out? I am having the same problem. It runs fine out of the water but as soon as you put the prop in the water it looses power. It stays running but won't run full RPM in the water. The motor is a Honda 24 2001. It does have a fuel pump in it. This is a new problem. It seems as though it is not getting enough gas. I have a new gas tank and quick disconnect, fuel filter. going to replace all the hoses next. This all started after I pull my boat about 100 miles. Don't know if this has anything to do with it or not. Could it be the fuel pump?

Any help is welcome.

Just went out and removed plug wire from each side. When I remove one side the engine dies. The other side it stays running and doesn't miss a beat. I also checked to make sure I was getting spark. So now I think it is time to rebuild the carb. How hard is it?

TIA

I have a 24 honda....

Draht, you are running on one cylinder and probably need a carb rebuild plus you have an elecrtical problem (bad plug, coil, etc). I had my carb rebuilt by a mechanic, it's almost 2 carbs sharing one body, I wouldn't mess with it unless you know what you are doing. That's just me, I felt safer letting a pro do it.

Jlusk, mine was acting the exact same way, I fixed it by getting the carb rebuilt, and by putting an electric fuel pump on (50 bucks from Napa, universal one off the shelf, puts out like 4 psi). Just wire it into the ignition so it comes on with the key and screw it to the stern, comes with an inline filter. I replaced the fuel filter on my motor with a clear one so I could monitor how well the fuel was flowing, that pump keeps the filter full all the time, problem solved. Also, get rid of any quick connects in your fuel line, they just suck air, even the one on your tank. Hose clamp all connections in the fuel line and make sure no lines are wet around the connection, if so they could be leaking and sucking air. And if all this doesn't fix it, I dunno what the heck it could be.

X2 on all that was said.

AND, never underestimate the need for a good clean air filter.

"runs fine on the trailer but bogs under load" usually means you have a bad cylinder (fire, fuel, something) or an overall fuel or air problem. Air filter is the one most folks overlook, and I have seen it fix that problem....

But if you are pulling the plug and nothing changes that is bad cylinder....

I have a 24hp Honda and sometimes it doesn't act up and sometimes it does when it does I have to take the prop out of the water get to the highest RPM and after about two or three times you'll hear the difference in the motor when I hit really shallow water it runs fine I check all the spec on the prop size and everything is right but load doesn't really come in to affect it just does it when it wants most of the time when I'm.running wide open and slow down and I have a metallic click from the fuel pump but runs fine until it bogs down sometimes it putts out
