Enjoy your new RPM, speed, and power.

What's your max rpm under load at your best speed? Turning the rpm much higher than that only gives the possibility of over revving when the prop pops out. If you have an exceptionally strong engine and it will turn over 4000 under load, congratulations, but understand that engine wasn't designed to run there continuously. I like the gov set at 4000 and there are darn few stock, boat/motor combos that will reach that rpm under load.

The best i've ever seen under a lite load is 3710 rpm 28.6 light skinny water and approx 26.5 deep. So your saying if i keep it at or below 4000 under a load that optimum. I set it today at 4060 out of the water. Ill have to wait to see what is does in the water later this week. I would like to set it at 4150 out that should put me at approx 4000 under lite to average load i believe. Thanks for your input.

You're RPM is low because your governor is set too low. Turn it up to 4200 and go run it. If you are conservative like Mr. Stu, then turn the governor down to ~100 RPM over your top RPM. You want that top end RPM when digging out.

Your governor will protect your motor from over revving if your prop jumps out of the water- that is what its there for. Not sure what Stu was getting at there. He seems to have an RPM Phobia and is intent on telling folks to leave RPM on the table.

The new CGI controlled motors have their rev limiter set at 4300, Briggs wouldn't design it that way if the motor couldn't handle it.

The restriction on the motor is possible valve float around 4400 RPM but thats different on every motor. When people have head work done, they have the valve springs shimmed to remove that restriction.

But if you don't mess with it you can get alot closer to FOREVER than if you do mess with it. Don't shorten it's life by messing with it! It'll last alot longer if you stay stock. thats my opinion.

Gov spring tension plays a bigger role in this than the simple adjustment of a screw.
