Post subject:  Installing a governor lock

Hey guys.. putting another motor together and wanna lock the govenor. Don't wanna change the cam on this one but opened up case to put a new gasket in... I noticed that the cam has weights on it, that obviously open up when the throttle is increased to actuate the govenor. Question is am I supposed to lock the weights from opening and if so the gov arm inside engine would be riding on the govenor mechanism on the cam. It's another 23hp vanguard and doesnt have a gear just the weights on cam ... thanks for the help fellas

Any ideas ? Guess it would be locking the gov. But when you lock them that would mean you lock it in the full throttle position just the same as setting it on a stock engine or would it go in the opposite direction

Stock carb sounds like. Why not just ziptie gov spring to raise rpm . If you really want it gone then remove cam, tape up decompression balls then grind the heads off of the pins that hold in the weights. Tap out with small punch. Wash it good. Put lifters back in the same bores with fresh lube. Cut bottom off gov arm or bolt up hole.... Dosent bps have gov block to fit a 23?

Sry should have said didn't have a carb when I got it but I had an extra mikuni I'm gonna slap on it so gov is off also And If I take the weight assembly off am I supposed to just " let the decompression balls just move freely.. " that's what she said" .. LOL .. no but they are controlled with that mechanical gov assembly or are you saying just the weights . That makes perfect sense. Then would it be out of balance .. and I do have a governor lock I can use.

Put the lock on its easier. The decomp ball runs off a seperate arm on the back side of the cam gear and is not affected by removing the gov weights from front of cam

So basically I can remove the weight assembly and would leave the decompression assembly. Then i could just do away with the gov lock. Remove the govenor shaft and be good with that. It's like 2 rivits holding the weight assembly on, parts wash really good after grinding the rivits and punching them out. That would be a fairly simple task and wouldn't have to worry about the weights at all. That's a great idea. It it would be balanced good after doing that..
