Hi Guys, Im running a 35hp mud buddy HDR on a 16ft xpress, motor has always ran great but started acting up a few weeks ago. Once i get the boat to almost plane out, the motor suddenly acts like it slips out of gear and looses all traction it has. I let the rpms come back down to idle, then the prop engages again and everything works fine. Once I get a little bit past half throttle, its like someone bumps the toggle switch into neutral suddenly. Is this a bad clutch? Or does the belt just need more tension on it?

There should be a plug on side of belt housing this is to access the belt to check tension. You should have reviewed a tension gauge when you bought the motor. If the belt is tight then it could be the clutch. Also check the terminals on the toggle switch they vibrate loose some times and check the rest of the connections. Low voltage may also be the problem by not holding clutch plates. Good luck

Does the prop actually stop spinning? Because the part of almost getting on plane and it loses bite sounds like a burnt prop.

If the belt is slipping, the belt is garbage, they have cogs.

I have this same problem. Did you find out what it is? When I get above 3500 RPM! The boat stops pushing and RPMs jump up, like spinning but no movement.
