Post 22hp Predator
I bought a almost new 22hp predator long tail from a guy and it has been running decent. My issue is that every time I run it, I seem like it could be getting some more rpms. Today while running, it seemed that it just was not even getting the usual rpms and was running sluggish, like almost bogging down to my old 12hp speeds through some lilly pads. I got to looking at the throttle cable setup that was on the motor. It is the standard knob that moves back and forth one. I noticed that it has sort of a "stop" at the "full throttle" position that keeps it from gaining any more rpms. Anyways, long story short, I took a pair of pliers and bent that thing out of the way. It ran like a scalded dog!! but now it seems like my throttle cable is all kind of messed up...can anyone send me a link or explain to me how to reset my throttle cable to keep getting the full rpms that i just got?? thanks

Get a tachometer and try to adjust it so it idles pretty close to 1000 and tops out around 3600-3800 in the water. What type of frame is this on?

adjust it at the back of the engine, go on Go Devils website and get the manual. Since that engine is supposed to be similar to a Honda, I would look at how they route and hook up the linkage for their Honda unit. It will have pics.

I saw in your first post it was a longtail, what's the brand? (ie, GD, mudbuddy, homemade, etc.)

Sorry, it is a company called "Mayhem Mud Motors". I think they are out of Ohio. The motor and frame are less than a year old.

Here is a pic of how GD attaches the cable. I bet Mayhem would help you out with a new cable if yours is messed up. You could also order a new one from BPS.

Here is a cheaper tach that works pretty good.

https://www.amazon.com/Hardline-Product ... B000FOOAXY

Get that thing tuned with a tachometer. Also, a few have had to add electric fuel pumps on those predator 22s. Make sure your getting enough fuel to that engine to turn the higher RPMs.

Did someone say Mayhem Mud Motors?

I'm a big fan and supporter of that 22 predator. I'll shoot you a PM.

I did, shoot me a pm. any help is greatly appreciated.

Anyhow, I did a little playing around with the throttle cable. It is not set right at the handle by any means, but I re-did it back at the motor, and then tightened it up as much as I could at the handle. It ran great yesterday in open water and in pads/grass/mud/hydrilla. Was getting 18mph with a 16x48 welded jon boat. I'm assuming that is about as good as I should expect with this rig?

I'd be happy with that speed.

I had that predator on a 14x42 with a Backwater kit, and I could get 23 empty and 19/20 with a 2 man load.

I'll get that PM sent today. Need to find a write up I did on that motor for some other guys.

I ordered the tach last week and just installed it. Out of the water, I am idling around 1300 and wot I'm hitting 4100. I ran the boat a lot on Sunday with just myself and dog, and was cruising at 18mph and knocking on 20 when I really got on it. I'm very happy with these numbers. Hopefully they last

I want to chime in here on the Predator 670. I'm running it on Copperhead chassis. My boat is an old 1436. I get 17mph loaded with 2 men. Mine turns 3900RPM in the water. However, I feel like I should get more top end. Videos with 23hp surface drives are getting mid to high 20's on bigger boats...Any advice here? I'm thinking it has to be my set up...

any cutting out or bogging down? maintains the 3900? (which is really impressive) The prop isn't getting too far out of the water?

Correct transom height and angle for the motor?

17 is very slow for that setup. as mentioned above, make sure transom height is correct, prop isnt fried, hull doesnt have hooks, etc. should be mid-upper 20s on man speeds.

Transom height is 16", pretty standard for a Jon boat. The prop is from the stock 12hp, however I do have the prop copperhead sent me for the 23 hp. Motor trimmed all the way down in deep water and maintains 3900. No surging whatsoever even with the stock mechanical fuel pump. As far as I can tell I am getting true wide open throttle.

[quote="jpo_land_man"]The prop is from the stock 12hp

Same prop moves the same amount of water. Switch to new prop.
