Post subject:  2008 Prodrive 36 Clutch Switch

Today my Prodrive kept kicking out of gear. First couple times pushed clutch swith in and pulled back out and it worked. But then after 2-3 times of that it stopped completely. However, I could still use the "momentary engagement button" to get back to dock. I removed the clutch switch and checked with multi-meter and it tests good on continuity.

If the clutch is bad would the momentary engagement button still work? Any advice on checking switch?

One other thing just for information. I just changed the eng oil and filter, greased, and changed the lower unit lube. I can't imagine this having any impact but odd that no problems before and this happens first time out.

1. unhook battery.
2. get a screwdriver.
3. take cover off the control box where your switch is.
4. look and see if you got a loose wire.
5. if u got a loose wire, unloose it.
6. put it back together or put a new switch in, then put it back together.
7. have fun.

Exact same scenario happened to me a couple of months ago. After diagnosing every which way turned out to a bad clutch ground. Clutch wires were really hot to the touch.

One thing you can do is unhook the two clutch wires at the clutch. make up two wires, spade on one end(clutch) and gator clips for the batter and run direct to the battery. When I knew I had a problem is when I disconnected the ground at the battery and the prop would keep turning. That and the two wires were VERY HOT.

Thanks for replies. Anyone know part number for clutch switch so I can check at local mower places? Prodrive says their number is PD173, but not cross reference.

If the clutch is shorting out you will know. It will show grounded on both pins and also pop the main fuse on the engine harness.
