Got a 35 hp vanguard, the stator was bad so I changed it and while changing the stator and noticed the coils were real rusted and kinda coming apart so I decided to just change them while I was asking taking everything apart, so I changed the flywheel and coils back on, gaped them to 0.05 and it started quick but was running very rough and just not running right so I tested to see they had a spark on the right side and it was very strong spark and that side is fine but the left side has a very week spark and I could tell it's not running right becuase of that side, well I change the plugs and that wasent it, still weak spark, regaped the coil, still weak spark, switched the spark plugs, still nothing, -and changed the connection on the back and checked the ground and still nothing, very clueless here to see what else could be wrong, need help asap

You sure it's getting a good clean not rusted up contact?

50 thou. Is too much gap. Any chance new coil is on backwards?

I don't think it's rust becuase I sanded on my flywheel really good to wear it's decently shiny, will sand it more tomorrow to make sure though, and I changed the contact to rule that out for sure, and I'm pretty sure the coil is on the right way because they both say this side out lol

Changing my stator would have anything to do with it huh ?

And since I side is getting a good spark and the other side is getting a weak spark, wouldn't that still mean it would be able to run good off of both cylinders since a constant spark is still going on

Now it won't even start at all, yesterday it would start and it would just run really rough, now it won't even start at all and it's blowing white blow out carb top and backfiring and when it does that that it gives the motor a very hard jerk

Check above^ .... also sure your new coils are same as old,, cdi / non cdi

Yes the coils are correct for the engine, it is the non CDI engine with th non CDI coils and what do you mean by too much gap ? 0.05 is the recommended

Diode?

Regaped them with the business card and still right side has very strong spark, and left side has a very weak spark. Motor will not even turn over now, I checked all the connections and everything seems to be be good and all my grounds are good. Very confused to what it could be now, maybe red wire isn't making good connection anymore cause of rust or something ? Also having some sort of black stuff in my carb

Check battery voltage. How does it turnover by hand with plugs out?. Feel stuck? Also disconnecting your coils will eliminate the poss of a diode. The wire is just to ground coil to turn it off. u will hav to choke it or something else to kill it when testing

Any chance it's really flooded

mine runs like crap on 1 cylinder from time to time. when it does I get it running and spray a can of cheap wd-40 into the flywheel screen and that usually knocks out my problem until I get it real dirty under there again.
quicker and easier than pulling the shroud and cleaning everything.
sounds like u got a bad diode or connection, and now u are flooded out bad. pull plugs, spin it over a bit and then let it set a while. check all your wires for a bad spot and check grounding.

I use a bidness card to set coils. make sure u don't have a coil upside down.

good luck.

It was deff flooded, I just pulled the plugs and turned it over for a little bit and gonna let it set for awhile and then spray the flywheel with some wd40 and see what happeneds , all my grounds and connections and are fine, when I try to crank it back up and it's still firing off only 1 cylinder, it would almost be positively the Diodes ? And where are they on the motor ?

Coil gap on the big block is .005", Also it's a magnetic pulse so rust isn't a detrimental issue.

The weak spark has been traced to a diode issue. He's going to fix that then go from there.

it was the diodes, got some new ones and runs like a champ

Good deal. It's a common issue on non CDI engines
