Motor-06 non CDI 35, 42hsr mikuni, and bps true duals, Governor delete. Has 74hrs on it.
A few weeks ago.
Apparently my rev limiter quit working because the motor wouldn't start. Unplugged green wire on rev box and she purrs like a kitten...or did.... I pulled carb and rebuilt due to bowl gasket leaking. I Just reset valve lash to .005". 5 hrs ago. Long story short, sitting in driveway, after carb reinstall, I was manually running carb linkage, and the throttle cable conduit dislodged with out the spring pressure holding it in, causing it to hang up on the end of the bps bracket ferule it normally sits in. This caused it to instantly rev to the moon. Not knowing what the heck happened, I immediately jumped to the key and shut her down. Im guessing it ran no limiter, wide open for 2.5-3 seconds. Scary! I started it back up and got a small puff of black smoke, and it was idling a little rougher than expected, not terrible but not as smooth. So I thought maybe valve lash was off due to over rev. Pulled valve inspection covers, and pushrods visibly looked ok, valves were loose, like .009" max. Reset both sides, and fired it back up. Today I'm noticing a slight squeaking when it comes to a stop after turning off ignition... And I've got a slight misfire or something may be a fuzz off on the lash?? I have included 2 vids. Am I crazy to run this thing? Or should I pull it apart and see what the heck may have happened??

The squeak is probably not related, but on the Miss or puff puff; id check the idle mixture to see if its not too lean. Richen it up 1/4 of a turn and let it catch up about 10 -20 seconds before making any more adjustments. IF nothing helps, do a leak down test and verify the intake valves are leaking.

I'm not sure what you mean by backlash on the engine. You will have backlash in the timing gear/cam gear from one direction to the other like you are describing. The crank rides on mag bearings and has the block as its Thrust bearing. If you feel a distinct backlash, and think its rods... It's hard to say. I know a loose rod wont last long at all, Like no load it will knock and make racket and chew up the crank journal. as with any internal engine issue you cant diagnose it over the internet.

Double check your belt tension in regards to the squeak.
