 electric trim actuator
Im just wondering if anyone can explain to me how a surface drive with electric trim is able to trim the motor electronically, but also able to 'pop up' when the skeg hits an object in the water? I have a home made motor with electric trim, but the actuator won't allow the motor to pop up if the skeg is hit. It hasnt become an issue yet, but I can see that it could be. I am making another setup with a 22hp subaru vtwin over the winter. I'd like to design it so I can trim the motor via an actuator and the motor will pop up if needed. I've looked at many pictures to try and wrap my head around it, but just cant seem to do it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Mike

 Re: electric trim actuator
The trim is attached at both ends, but the top isn't attached to the drive unit. It pushes up, but doesn't pull the motor down, it just gets out of the way basically. Gt does it a bit different (the trim is mounted horizontal up top, and the lower unit isnt attached at the bottom of the transom mount, so it flips up.
Very simple explanations, but should get the point across.

 Re: electric trim actuator
thanks for the reply. I think that kind of makes more sense to me. The bottom of the actuator is attached to the motor. In my case to the bracket that attaches to the transom. Then, the top of the actuator would be kept floating in something to allow the motor to pivot up or down when the skeg hits a log or something? I imagine putting the top of the actuator into a rod end or something to keep it centred. Any pictures would help if at all possible.
