Been considering selling my boat for a few months now and after doing alot of parking and walking this year to hunt the refuge I think that different is going to be a smaller refuge boat. I know these are relatively new motirs so I couldn't find alot if info on them... im leaning to the PD with the kohler because theres a dealer here 5 min from me and i really like the thought of the EFI. However i feel that the 25 BB gator tail is going to run alittle stronger. Anyone got any input? Looking at 1648

If it were me I'd pull the 37 off the frame and slap on of these on!

Just imagine that on small boat  abd really thats the main thing that's keeping me on the fence between the two. Id really like the PD with efi and having a dealer really close, but in the back of my mind I know theres performance upgrades to the briggs with the GTR..

I saw a post on mmc on fb, someone was advertising a stroker kit from midwestsupercub for the 25 Koehler I believe and it was a stout motor also

See what im thinking is though something like that on the kohler you could get away with, but I don't think you coukd get away with a 25 big block around here with say a carb and exhaust. I always get checked by Federal GW's and based on how they always crawl all over my boat looking for violations now, I don't think they'll go for that one. Could be wrong though. If i go the PD route I'll probably just stick with a PD hull since its convenient and i like the PD hulls. But if i go GTR i think I'll definitely go custom with it.

Just from pricing a hull and motor off the PD website im looking at around $12k and gator tail had a complete rig listed for $14.5k but idk if a custom would be any more or less.. trying not to let that influence me but that's quite a big difference for someone working with a budget (this one is gonna be all on me) Ill go by the dealer tomorrow if their open and see if i cant get a good quote from them.

If anyone on here has any experience with either motor and has some numbers i'd be very appreciative. I was looking at the 1648 x series hull but I noticed that the 1748 is only $100 more and 25# heavier, but I know how finicky the small motors can be. Idk if that extra foot will make a difference or not. Thanks

That extra foot would help when loaded.

How about just throwing a 25 shroud on a 36?

Thats fine as long as they dont run the serial number.

Then I guess you'd get to explain why your serial number was removed. My guess is that would lead to a bigger problem than simply being caught with an oversized motor.

Serial numbers are etched on the valve covers now. Nothing on the block no mo. Been that way for a while now.

If I were to buy a refuge boat (which I will in the future) it will be a custom hull (most likely instagator) very open layout. With a Copperhead and or swomp with 25 big block.

Just last week we got checked by a fed and he measured my dad's prop and looked over his cowling real good ( to see if it had been re-badged or painted over I assume) this was on an outboard. They put way more scrutiny into mudmotors.

I imagine if the 25bb modding trend takes off as I'm sure it will they will legislate a way to keep modded ones off federal land.

Yeah i been running my 37 to the entrance to the refuge then walking the rest of the way and they always question the shit out of me about how and where i hunted. The only problem with the hp and prop regs around here is the only way to the refuge is via public water way that big boats run all the time. So its hard for them to make a fair argument unless they catch you in there, which they seldomly leave the ramp.

I like CB's idea of switching to the 35 stock carb and switching internals so the outside appearance is the same. You have to be doing something really illegal for them to want to try and prove your over hp like that.

So the 25BB has readily available performance parts, but does anyone know of anything performance wise for the 25 kohler? I still like the idea of efi as well fpr.

Midwest super cub has more kohler parts than you could shake a stick at, but they are not tried and true in this market like the parts for the big block briggs. The kohler stuff is geared towards really high rpm motors, where you need bottom end power on a mudmotor. Going with the kohler, generac, kawi's, you're going to be doing a lot of figuring stuff out on your own, and a lot of trial and error. With the briggs, well you get to deal with owning a briggs, but you have a lot more proven options available for what you're trying to do.
