Post to much compression?
so a couple weeks ago readjusted my valves at 20 hrs. had a minor issue after adjusting them the motor would turn over then it was almost like there was to much compression. turned the key put the HDR in forward turned the prop till i felt the compression threw the switch to neutral turned the key and fired up no problem. next day go scouting for some birds fires up not problem runs like a top. didn't use the boat for over a week for lack of birds go to fire it up just to run the motor and keep the carb somewhat clean same thing happens as the first time turns over won't fire. did the same thing throw the key put the trans in forward turn the prop and everything is good fired up and ran good. so tonight cause it has been almost a week since i started the motor i tried to start it, acted like it had to much compression did the same thing that i did before turn the prop till i felt compression tried to stat the motor and nothing will turn over maybe a quarter of a turn at the most then to much compression. was told from the dealer to hold the key and it would start. I tried holding the key for about 30 secs and got nothing.

any help would be useful. this is a 4400HRD and has just over 21hrs on it.

Spoke to him. Chances are good it's just a weak battery. He'll report back tomorrow with results after a full charge.

Whatever you tell him make sure you tell him to NEVER hold the key switch for 30 sec whether the motor is turning not. I hope he misunderstood the dealer-if not, I wouldn't listen to anything else the guy tells him.

Not a good idea under either circumstance.

If motor is spinning, you burn starter up. If not, then you catch your wiring on fire,

Way to much current flowing to just hold like that.

If your motor won't start, then hit it short burst. 5 sec maybe.

Sounds a little like vapor lock to me,,,

Mainly because he said turning the prop seems to fix it.

But could be anything from weak battery to bad connection.

I had the same issue and it was a bad battery as Russ mentioned. I went deep to find the problem, Rev limiter, starter etc. only to realize I should have used the KISS method, because it was a bad battery which was only two weeks old. FYI: This was the third battery I had in the damn boat in 1 1/2 months. First 1 was a farm store deep cycle, second and third battery was a deep cycle duralast from Auto zone. Never buying marine batteries from either place again. After $300.00 in parts and installing a new rev limiter I bought an optimax and have had zero issues all season.

Good deal. Glad that's all it was. Pay attention to what caddobrook mentioned for the future. Heat melts things, and a starter not turning is still creating heat.
