I have a 36 Prodrive remote steer. On occasion having trouble with starting it. Turn key and all hear is a click. Usually after several attempts it will turn over and starts easily. Several times have had to put it in gear and turn prop and then it will crank up. Have already change voltage regulator and starter but problem continues!!! Any advise appreciated. Thanks in advance |

If you're hearing the starter solenoid click when you turn the key to "start" then it's not a bad clutch switch. It's typically a sign of something wrong with the yellow wire that goes to the solenoid from the key switch, a fuse, or the solenoid itself. If you just turn the key to "run" and hear a click, then something is going on with your clutch switch. The starter solenoid won't click if the clutch switch is engaging in some way. No voltage will make it to the solenoid. Check all wires that go to the starter (including your battery cables) for voltage and condition, any fuses in the circuit for potential loss of connection, and get that starter checked out. It could be dying inside (rust, weak springs due to overheating, burnt contacts inside). These thing will cause a starter to just ignore the voltage it gets from the solenoid and not kick out and turn. |

I just did a repair last week. More times then not the older the rig is, it will show up. Older wiring, Pinched wiring, too small of wiring, key switch wearing at its Start contact, Anything could be the issue and it is TIME consuming to trace it and fully replace all the components. My solution is to add a relay that excites the starter solenoid with full current from the battery VS the key switch. I only use the key to trigger the Relay. Problem solved on many engines. |
