Post 35 HP Briggs gator tail starter not engaging flywheel
Ok I'm sure this has happened to a lot of people out there, but I'm new to the game..The past few times I've been out, occasionally when I hit the key to start it up, I hear the starter whine, and does not engage the flywheel..I shake the motor a little, and keep tapping the key and it will eventually catch and start it right up. I took it to mobile in November on a red fish trip, so it has seen a couple days of brackish water, but mostly fresh water in southern Indiana. didnt know if it was rust around the gear on the starter, or something getting ready to go wrong.just don't want to get stranded down stream..any suggestions?
Thanks

Try pulling starter or fan shroud and lube up the bendex. Probly a good idea to order a starter

Trust me. Order a new starter.

Check the voltage at the yellow wire on the solenoid.

Seriously though, order a new starter. It could just be the solenoid (and likely is), could be voltage at that yellow wire (quite possible too), but from experience, it sucks when you're 6 miles from the landing and your starter goes boom when you turn the key, or doesn't do anything when at the landing at 430 am, or everything else goes kchunk after a nice, ear pleasing whirrrrr turned screech at 4300 rpms.....

Ok thanks for the responses..when you say Check voltage at yellow wire, what should I be reading?..and this is with the key on, or while cranking?
Thanks

When cranking. Above 12 volts.

Ok found a diagram, shows the yellow from the solenoid goes to the 4 pin I assume is on a relay..so I'm guessing I shouldn't read anything unless the key is turned?

So if less than 12volts, it's the solenoid

No, if less than 12volts, it's the wiring or battery or key switch or something before the starter.
