Post looking for a good performance recipe for 23 copperhead.
Lil Boat.JPGIm in central Texas and run the rivers as well as the coast. i want to buy a cam for my 23 copperhead, and hear the SETX cam is the cats ass, but their website is not working and their phone goes to a mailbox that is full. On a side note can i run their cam, a MAC exhaust and have my heads re worked with out having to do a carburetor swap too? My boat will bump 29 MPH at 3800 rpm but i would like to hit 35. i don't run any mud, just tired of getting passed on the way to my duck holes. i think i need to be turning about 4600 RPM. my runs are between 3 and 10 miles each way.

Also, if you are running 29 mph, and are tired of getting passed up going to your hole, you are not running 29 pal...

Speeds aside, if you do that work, you're gonna want to flow more air and fuel, and it'll be cheaper than any of the upgrades you listed.

Shoot I used to run 32 with a boat about the same size and a 50hp outboard. Whatever you're doing that allows me to cut my Hp in half, AND run it as a surface drive, I want in! Snake oil and all!

I will say, you should get that prop scanned and reproduced. It's magic.

Post Re: looking for a good performance recipe for 23 copperhead.
Well guys, thanks for replying... I guess. The main guy that passes me is running a jet on a 115 evenrude, and I think he has a 16 foot tunnel jet hull. I think his boat will do almost 40, but he launches a few miles up river from me. So I have a head start. I guess I could just paddle my boat to my spot and sleep in it for the night, but this is America so fuck that plus I gotta get my taco and they don't open till 5am. I'll make a video first thing Saturday and verify the gps speed and post it for you guys that don't believe me. Maybe I can get the guys at NORAD to confirm my speeds some how for you that don't understand how good computers are at math. Especially simple math like v=d/t. Any way the bottom line is I have a light weight 15' waterfowler from academy that runs pretty good with that 23 copperhead. And I want to know if the MAC exhaust I ordered today along with some head pollishing , stainless valves (for more durability not Hp), intake porting, and a cam will get me 4600 rpm? I guess I'll need to remove the governor. And will that rpm effect my charging system?

The mods shouldnt affect charging system.
The mods also wont get you to those rpms, unless you go to a mikuni I'd think.

If you do heads, cam, carb, exhaust, you should be at or around your target rpm's.

And if the guy passing you has a jet, why not get you one?

Your gonna fit right in, welcome, lol. Just for fun i googled 23 mods mudmotortalk. Alot of info comes up. Your ideas for mods are good except as these guys said you realy need a good carb. If you need help with getting heads built just holler

Awesome rebuttal. I've a built 23 that's pretty decent . You really need to carb it, along with all the exhaust , cut the governor and you'll see well above 4700. I cruise pretty constant at about 4650. Setx is the magic for these 23. Get with nick Willey on here. Or Willey fast on face book .

Get with Nick @ Willey Fast.

He just had one of the single cylinder motors running 40mph...

He can make that little 23 run strong!

Guess "we" still aren't cutting new guys any slack. At least he ended up getting point in the right direction.
I'm not doubting it runs 29 empty (skeptical), but there's no way it's running that with a load. Nicks 40MPH rig isn't touching that speed either while loaded.

Increase flow in and flow out - whatever your budget allows. Start with exhaust and then heads. Go with the carb as money allows it. Do the cam last. You can put together a Mikuni carb. kit like for under 400 bucks. I just put my 35 carb together for just over 500, and the 32mm mikunis are a good amount cheaper than the 42HSRs. I'll help you put it together if you need.

Plan on 400-600 for the exhaust, 500-700 for the heads, and 400+ the carburetor for some ball park numbers. 200-300 for a cam. Lots of variables to be had.

Good luck.

Post Re: looking for a good performance recipe for 23 copperhead.
well amigos, I have lied to you. yesterday evening I took my nephews out on the lake in the little boat, and with the smallest on on board about 60 lbs, all we could do is 27, and only about 80% of the time at that, and that all took place at around 3850-3900 rpm. Sorry for the misrepresentation. The propeller has been banged up by the rocks in the river, i have buffed the burs off of it a couple of times with a 3" scotch bright pad on a pneumatic buffer i will try to post a picture so y'all can let me know if i need to replace it.

So, what I'm hearing is that it needs a better carburetor.

I have ordered my MAC from Copperhead, and i am going to tear down the top end today, now i just need to dive into finding all the carburetor parts. If any one has a source or parts i could buy I am down. Thanks again guys.

My two cents: (which are worth less than that due to the shape of the current economy) I'd wait to pull it apart till you have parts in hand to put it together... shipping problems etc, can leave you with an open motor and an inoperable boat for longer than you want. Then there's that whole "where the hell did that bolt go" scenario....

SETx Longtail, you are right there. I think what ill do is wait for my MAC to come in and run that then post the results. Then do the head work, and post the results, and then the carburetor. I think the right thing for me to do is pay my dues to the forum by posting the most sterile accurate reviews of the MODS i do for everyone's benefit.
I just had a good conversation with Russ on the phone, which i appreciate him taking time out of his Saturday to talk to me about my set up. I have been stalking the forum for a year or two searching everything and have found so much conflicting information it makes it all worthless. I will do my best to keep this thread flush with pictures and instructions on how I i do any work i do to the motor.
If anyone can tell me what size valves are the "over sized valves" that they put in the heads i would appreciate it. ill order them this week and maybe i can post an MAC review this week and a head review next week. Also should i get a "Rev Kit" or stiffer springs?

Sorry for the silence Gents, I have been stupid busy and it has been hotter than hell around here. I received my MAC exhaust and installed it but have not done a test run yet. I also received my cam and valves from Willey Fast. After talking with Nick I went with a PVT cam that he had in stock so that I could keep my governor. That dude is super helpful and knows lots about these motors. he advised me to buy a stock 35 carb to run in place of my 23 carb so I posted it on the Facebook page and bought one from a guy in Orlando for 50$ to my door. Pretty sweet deal. The guy that is going to do the valve job for me has one of those Newark CNC valve seat machines and is going to hook it up with some space age radius valve job or something. as well as clean up bowls. He said basically the seat will be blended perfectly with the combustion chamber and the bowls. he is out until Thursday so ill drop them off with him then and hopefully ill be able to reassemble and run it with the head job done. im still looking to post reports for just the exhaust, then the heads and exhaust, and finally the exhaust, heads, and cam. I did find time to build a duck bill for my boat. For some reason I cant upload pictures from home so when I get to work tomorrow I'll up load all the pictures.

Just prepping ahead of time. The elbow the carb bolts to has a major restriction in it. Take it along with the heads to get cleaned up

thanks to Darryle for posting those pictures for me. The prop I'm not sure if its ok or not, both blades are a little beat up from the gravel and rocks in the river, so I just buff out the big gouges I don't know how I feel about the duck bill, but it will serve its purpose to protect my lights and get them off the top of the bow. but i do like the hand holds. let me know what you think.

well I ran my boat today with the MAC exhaust and now it runs at 4040 RPM which is right at 150 rpm increase. the fastest speed I saw was 28.4 MPH. but it was just me and 6 gallons of fuel in the boat. I cant wait to get the head work, Cam, and Carb Done I bet 35mph is not out of reach. On a side note I almost died when the freaking 2 little 3/8" bolts that clamp the tiller arm in place came loose. that fucker is about to get welded in place. I really think I need a new prop but am worried it will just get dinged up like this one is. does any one have any recommendations for a good prop I can use at the coast when rocks arn't a concern?
