I recently just had to do a short block to my 35hp gatortail, while doing this I added a cam and roller rockets already had heads exhaust and a mukuni carb, I went to fire my motor up and I can get it started, my starter barley turns over with a fully charged battery, I can kinda get it going but it acts like it's only running on a one cylinder and then dies very shortly after. I have checked my valve clearances twice and for what I understand they should be good. I'm plant on taking my cowling all back And check that wiring here tomorrow and make sure that it's all looking good, if anyone has any suggestions to this, greatly appreciated, thanks Joe

Check to see if your spark plug wires are arcing across to your cowling. That will make it spit and sputter like she's running on one cylinder. Wrap them up with some electrical tape where they pass through the cowling.

Do you have any idea why it'swould be having such a hard time turning over its acting like it doesn't have enough juice i took a volt meter and got 12.4 volts and it drops to 9 volts when trying to start is that typical?

Nope. What's the voltage on the yellow wire, and when you jump the solenoid does it turn over slow?

I'll check the yellow wire when I get home and it still turns over slow when I jump the selenoid

Then don't bother on the yellow wire. Isn't gonna be the problem. For grins and giggles, try to use a different battery, or hook up jumper cables. Just see if that battery is truly ok. It doesn't sound like it is with it dropping to 9v.

I will try a different battery but I hooked up a jump starter to it also and same thing, I thought it could be getting to much compression that's why it not turning over but not sure I'm gonna try pulling the plugs after work and try and start it and see if it turns over better

These starters don't slow down much even with compression at 240. I'm around 217 and don't have any slowing of my starter. I have worked with a guy that had a slow starter, but his valves weren't set right and one cylinder neither valve was opening.

Stupid question but, were you on the compression stroke when you set the valve lash? Did you lube up the parts before installing them? I'd hate to see you gall up something trying to turn it over. If you're sure of your work, let her eat and see what happens.

Yeah I did do my valve lash like that, I did cal lgatortail and they said the same thing about try a different battery and I told them about my other problem that my voltage regulator I think that box above my starter would get almost too hot to touch with the key on not the motor running, have any of you guys and a problem like that?

Bps told me that it's probably locking up cause I used a gasket on the crank case instead of rtv

what motor do u have ? and whats the model number on the back of the valve cover on the number 1 side?

In reference to the spitting and sputtering, are you sure you have your timing set correctly?

I really doubt having a case gasket is the problem. Did it spin freely when setting the valves?

No and now since I removed the gasket and engine is completely locked up I'm assuming that maybe since I took that governor shaft out and replaced it with a bolt maybe the washer on the inside of the block is hanging up on my cam shaft, idk I'm gonna check that today cause I can not turn that prop by hand at all

Let us know what you find, hope its minor

Post subject:  Re: Mud motor won't start

The culprit of why it was locking up is on the short blocks you have to ground down 4 high points on the crank case cover and they hit the clutch and bind the pto shaft also I did not have the beveled washer that was suppose to be against the crank case and the clutch got it started and got to run but seems like the mukuni is not getting enough fuel now

He pumps the bulb and voila, it runs better. He's gonna adjust the float and check his fuel pump.
