What was first year for CDI ignition

 What was first year for CDI ignition As title states what was the first year for the CDI motors? A buddy has a prodrive with a 36hp marine engine that is a 2011 model made in july of 2011. Dose it have the coils with the built in rev limiter? I think I have read here before that if it says marine it has the CDI coils with limiter but I want to be sure. He is getting a mikuni and wants to know if he needs the rev box or not.
