Review on my new delta Level 3
I finally took my boat out after the install, the power gains were noticeable as soon as I hammered down on the throttle, I’m running an 11 pitch hammer the top speed was less than I was hoping for but it would get there in like 6 seconds. I was running an 1851 prodigy solo in calm deep water and mytop speed was 28.7. I was thinking it should run 30-31.. I’m sending my big blades to baggy, I hope to be running 33 or so once I get a worked big blade on there.
Now here’s the bad part, once I took the boat out of the water I noticed the back of the motor has oil all over it, got it home cleaned it up the ran it and my fears came true, the MFing crank shaft seal is leaking. I installed a new seal and it looked like t seated good while re assembling. Once the new seals come in I’ll inspect the old seal. This L3 build has been nothing but a pain in my ass!!!!!!

What RPMs were you turning?
That does seem a little slow, prop work will likely help. FWIW though I have a heavy built boat and don’t get insane top end speeds by any stretch but mod carrying is where I can clearly see the difference which is great.

4250-4350 was where I was trying to keep it. It feels like it would carry an elephant, I am going to get the seal replaced then see what it will do with the same prop and a couple people.

Re: Review on my new delta Level 3
What brand of motor?
MBs run higher rpms than what your stating, however gator tails seem to run about those rpms from the ones we have modded.
My MB turns around 4600 and with a hammer. I can run 30 solo, 27/28 with my hunting crew in my 3man hide.
When you say level 3, what does that consist of? Seems like every motor guy has a different makeup.

Hammer is not a speed prop. It will tote a load and plane fast and runs out of steam. There is a process to keep the seals good. Sand the crank WELL and lube the seal.

Re: Review on my new delta Level 3
Level 3 is cam heads ecm and i choose a SW exhaust. I ran it again and hit 29.5 at 4750 Rpms. I understand the hammer isn’t for speed but i think 30 would have been easily achieved with the added HP. I’m not looking to go crazy fast I just want to make sure my motor is performing like it should with the mods.

Re: Review on my new delta Level 3
HP does not equal speed. RPM turn the prop. I have a GTR with delta level three (carb) .190 gauge on 1754 with hunt deck. I run same speeds as you. BUT with 4 guys, 5 dozen decoys, case of shell, 2-20 pound propane bottles with heaters, 9 gallon of gas, 1 pound of bacon and a dozen eggs it with still run 25!!!

Re: Review on my new delta Level 3
I ran it again and I wasn’t babying it this time. I was turning 4700-4800 rpm and running 29-29.5. It appears to have the power to turn the prop but I was expecting a little more speed out of the hammer, even though it isn’t a speed prop. I know people that run 32 with a hammer on same mods so either my gearing is low or I need to check my valves again. I am going to run it with a couple people this weekend to see what she will do with a load in the boat. I will be more than happy with 25 carrying 4 people and a hunt load.

Re: Review on my new delta Level 3
I’m comparing my prodigy 1851 wide open lay out to a 1854 prodigy that has about everything in it that you can get ( heavier boat). I know the extra width could change performance some but not 2-3 mph. Once I get time to work on the motor again I’ll recheck valves to see if one or more are off which could be robbing me of power.

Re: Review on my new delta Level 3
Fastest I ever seen a hammer was 33 with a fully built engine. They are not EVER going to be fast. If you want faster get a merc 3 blade. if you want faster and still do well in veggies... get a big blade

Re: Review on my new delta Level 3
An interesting statement considering hp is a measurement of power based in part on engine rpms. The other variable being torque. It can very much equal speed, if you have enough prop that it doesnt just slip with the rpm increase. If he was to trim his engine down, and it would only turn 4400, more hp at 4400 rpms would allow him to turn 4500, or even higher. The prop would then spin faster at that trim depth, and both theoretically and in actual practice, give him more speed because the prop is not shedding as much water as when it was trimmed up.
Hp alone does not equal speed in most sd cases because we rarely only change power output, but the hp available at a specific engine rpm and gearing have a direct relationship with prop rpms. The final "gear" is the prop. That whole enchilada is what will affect speed at specific rpms. If hp is the only thing changed and it goes up, prop rpms can now go up since the engine can turn more rpms. Changing gears changes hp at the prop, and that allows you to turn different prop configurations to achieve desired performance results.
Obviously, changing other things (pitch, cup, rake, load, shallow or deep water, etc) have their own relationship with speed, but to say hp doesnt equal speed is misleading.

Re: Review on my new delta Level 3
^^^ HP to weight ratio, propeller, and as parallel of a push will get the fastest speed.. Newtons law....Never forget that

Re: Review on my new delta Level 3
If I would have received the motor from delta I would be like ok it is doing what is suppose to be doing. I put the mods in myself and I want to be sure I’m gettjng what I’m suppose to be getting out of the build. I’ve seen GPS speeds with the boat I’m referring too. If 29 is all I get from the hammer that’s fine, I would rather carry 4 people 25 mph than me 33 solo.

Re: Review on my new delta Level 3
Ran the boat this weekend with two people a dog cooler and some Other stuff. It ran just as strong as it did with me solo. I am very impressed with how quick the boat is, when you hammer down on it you better hold.
