I had my engine rebuilt with Delta's Level 2 mods. I was running a 220 compression with shaved heads and shaved pistons, before the mods and I wanted to bring the compression down for longevity and I went with Delta's level 2 set up. I have an older PD 36 with a gen 2 lower. I have a mikuni and BPS rockers and push rods still installed. I will say I was underwhelmed on the first run. I checked the plugs after the run and they were perfect, if not maybe a little lean. I then checked teh compression and bithe heads were at 120 each- which is a stock number? I did have a large load, three guys, 240, 220 and 185, two dogs a full tank of gas and two batteries. I was running 23-25. I bumped 26 at 4550 RPM's but it is still breaking in and I was mostly running at 4350. If I was going to run at 3800 i would have been plowing. I am assuming it will loosen up a little, but I was surprised to see the compression so low. I run a 1752 Cajun Performance (custom) center console. Thoughts? Are these numbers about right or is something off? Just curious, because I'm going form a fairly hopped up motor. |

120 is lower compression than stock. As long as the compression test is accurate, throttle Is open, valves not to tight, gauge works etc... I would say your cam is installed with timing retarded a lot and closing the intake valve too late. Just to verify, your running a stock shortblock, stock cam, .045 delta heads? By your numbers the power doesn't seem to bad for that size load on a pd |

Well shit- I did the compression test after several beers running the lake, and I don’t think I opened the throttle for the compression check. Deltas level 2 comes with a cam, heads decked at .045 ( I believe) and a mikuni. I already had the mikuni, so I just swapped the BPS cam and IM heads for Delta’s and removed the shaved pistons and cusustom rods and changed them to stock. I still have BPS rockers, push rods and Q muffler. |

I would think you would run faster than that bro. We ran 31 this morning with 3 big men over 200 lbs, a lab over 100 lbs, and a full hunt load. My 40 is stock with exhaust, air filter, cut skeg, and baggy prop. Would think with a stage 2 you would be faster. I guess it all has to do with the hull |

With that load I would have jumped up on plane no issue and run about 29-30 before the swap. The hull may not be the fastest, but my setup has never been left behind before with a load. This current set up feels like I went back to a stock motor- slow to get on plane, no balls, and slow to build speed. I didn't get a chance to check the compression again, but I will try to do that tomorrow. |

Recheck that compression while your are rechecking valve adjustments. I believe you now have a delta level 3, commonly referred to as a stage 2. 175-185 compression I think. |

I spoke to Jamie over at Delta, and it sounds like the Cam was not timed correctly on install. I am going to take it in and see if this fixes the problem- and you are right- I am running their level 3 set up. It is definitively not pushing 50 plus Hp. I finally had some time to pull the plugs and gap them. But, when I went to run the compression check my battery was dead... |

The compression is good. If someone in your area knows how to use a degree wheel you could have cam checked without pulling it down. Other possibilities,, valves too tight, carb way out of tune, ign timing off, key moved, coils flipped, non cdi/cdi mixup etc, exhaust not flowing, weird batch of fuel, weird prop, new hook in boat,, I'm tying to thing of all longshot possibilities here, lol |

The problem is fixed. I think I was essentially running on one head. When they did they did the head install one of spark plugs got damaged and had a 0 gap- yes.000. After I gapped my spark plugs to .030, the motor ran awesome all weekend for opener. I was carrying my "puddler rack", puddller, full hunting set etc on deep water and it was running 30-31.6 and then I backed off a little because the RPM's were close to 4700 and it's a new build. It was like whole different motor- probably the best it has ever run. I am glad it was an easy fix! Thank yof or the input Will C. |
