Just FYI, with these cool-aid drinking clowns who have very little time behind the wheel of each, anything you say that has GTR in it, the answer will be GTR.

Boss vs GTR...... GTR
Lambo vs GTR..... GTR
Boeing 747 vs GTR.... GTR
Pussy vs GTR.... GTR

See where this is going.

On a serious note, you need to drive each of them so you can determine which is best for your needs. I can tell you that no matter what these clowns say about any of the major brands, they all have their good and bad points. The first thing the GTR clan will saw is get a GTR because its faster. Of course it will be, your allowed to change pulley ratios, but they use the same 35/37/40 block. Speed is only part of the equation. For me, give me load carring capacity. I want to be able to run fully loaded with hunting gear or shit going to camp. What the coolaid crown doesn't tell you is that while he can run fantastic on top end, due to his 99" prop cupped to the max, with a cup of fuel in his boat, his "load" carrying sucks. So again, really depends on your needs and wants.

Any of the major brands will give you good speed. You would be surprised that a persons hull will effect speeds more than his brand of motor. And one more thing, take everyone's speed with a grain of salt unless you witnessed it yourself. When they claim their faster they may be 34.7 and your 33.9. Sure he's faster, but does it really matter that much. Now there are some really fast hulls, but they are strictly built for speed and have spent stupid amounts of $$ on their engines and props.

If you plan on having to use reverse a lot, get a prodrive. Nothing compares to them in that category. I like the GTR because of the lower unit being pretty easy to work on yourself or change belts and whatnot. As far as it being the best, I'm sure every single brand has their pros and cons. For what I do and where I hunt, I like my GTR but I'm sure any mud motor I had I would enjoy just as much as long as it got me to and from our little hunting and fishing areas

GTR would be the last brand I would buy. HDR would be first. Then boss then prodrive.

As stated above - it's kind of a ford vs chevy vs gmc debate.
they all have good
they all have bad
do you prefer belt or gear driven?
look at pros and cons to what you would use it for.
remember all things on this are OPINIONS.

We all say "I don't care what anyone thinks!!" yet we wont buy something on Amazon because 13 people said it sucked lol

Get the one you want to get and drive it like they toy it's meant to be.

In a commercial fishing setting, reverse and neutral is a must have. When my dad was doing commercial fishing before he retired (he did it for about 35 years) and my grandpa did it about 50 years, they would run anywhere from 50-150 crab traps or crawfish trips or anywhere from 10-30 hoop nets. They always had outboards but they always used reverse and neutral constantly. My dad has said in the past that without the neutral and reverse gear, running that many traps and nets would be impossible to do and make profit because it would take you 10 times longer to do the work. As far as commercial fishing goes forward and neutral is a must. Quantity and quality equals money in the commercial game, so the faster you can do your work, the better.

As far as recreation, whatever gets you to the hole, works fine

well, as a comm fisherman who runs several different types of traps/nets and frogs a lot, you couldn't give me any of the belt drives. but that's me. get whatever works for you!!!!

I will be using it on a small lake where I mainly hunt, the only reason I want to go with a mud motor vs an outboard is because every year halfway through the season they open the dam and the river I like to hunt a few potholes off of you need a MM to get u it and to get around the mouth of the river is sometimes literally a mud flat with inches of water where the channel is. I have narrowed the hull down t the new havoc 1756 mstc mud hull for 2019 or a gator tail extreme 1756.

A slightly different perspective, and one that probably isn't worth anything at this point as it's an old thread, but, wth, maybe it will help someone else. When talking recreational use, I prefer the Mud Buddy. Granted, mine is only an HD, but I have been very happy with it. Initially, I thought the more robust GTR HD handle set up would be my preference, but after trying my buddy's GTR (multiple times) next to my HD, I prefer the HD. I think it (Mud Buddy) is more nimble for cornering and absorbs more of the shock when hitting stumps, etc, and even an unbalanced prop for that matter.... Now if I were to strictly look at build quality and tough design (speaking mainly of the handle), I would lean towards a Gator Tail, but I'm talking maybe 100 hours per year in a recreational environment vs. hundreds of hours in a "commercial" environment where robust parts win the day. But there again, after a 12 hour day of crabbing, maybe the ergonomics of a "softer" handle would help with sore muscles .... Maybe I'm a pussy, idk.... 15 years in the heavy equipment repair industry quickly shows you how to work smarter... The trailoring system on the GT/GTR sucks, plain and simple. I'm not impressed with the 'horse shoe' design of the transom retainer. Who the f**k thought that up, Forrest Gump?! Trailering the Mud Buddy, tilt forward, push the pin in, tilt back, no fuss, plenty of holding power, excellent design. Power train(s) are obviously equal, as is the cost. I would have honestly leaned hard toward a Gator Tail until I tried one. Reliability? That's where the coolaid comes in. I've towed a GTR with less than 60 hours on it, and I"m sure he'll tow me someday. Mechanical devices fail, just the way it is... too may variables to say which is "best". It's all up to personal preference. If you are about to throw down $$ ask to drive them.....pick what you prefer.....

I think you would be hard pressed to find a comm fisherman who even wants to use a mudmotor. they would much rather use a outboard or inboard outboad that hardly ever breaks down, has tons of power, and is user friendly. them boys running traps/nets with a mudmotor is roughing it! lol

I’ve owned them all. It’s all a personal preference. My Boss has a break in period. After about 50 hours I could flip my shifter as fast and as easy as my GTR. It also picked up speed once the gears broke in.
Here is my take. Boss is comfortable to drive with a tiller handle. Far easier than any other. The Boss can go from one extreme to the next with props. More so than any other brand. It either really likes a prop or it hates it so much it kills
Performance. Mine loves a 2 blade and my friends loves the 3 blade. My Boss performs great in thick vegetation.
My GTR was by far the fastest of them all. Paired with the 1848 extreme, it performed best in the mud compared to any rig I’ve owned.
My PD paired with the 1854 PD hull was the slowest rig I’ve had. However, it ran the same speed with a load as if did with out one. The PD hull was my favorite to fish out of. The reverse was nice but sometimes in windy conditions, you will wish you had instant reverse. The back weight of a PD made it run the best of what I’ve owned in the grass. I thought my GTR was better in the mud. There is no customer service better than Prodrive.
GD was fun. I owned a few. I really like CoCo. However, I left GD because I was miserable anytime I needed to idle around in thick vegetation for frogs. The balanced motor would lift up out of the water. With that being said, lifting the balanced motor out of the water to only use the bottom of the prop would make crabbing and running jug lines easy. You could creep up on them at a slow slow pace.
At times I wish I still had my PD, other times GTR and on long rides I’m happy with my Boss and custom hull. It’s all up to what you like.
