Post Prodrive mechanic close to Baton Rouge
Took the boat out on her maiden voyage for today. I was sorely disappointed with its performance. Trimmed out trim down trimmed up trim flat maximum speed was 8 miles per hour. It was acting like it was bogging down the whole time, so I'm guessing that I need a good Pro-Drive mechanic. I know nothing about these mud motors, this is my first rodeo with setups and boats. But it has got to be better than this. I need some help! Thanks in advance.

It's a lawnmower engine. Nothing complicated. Ever cleaned a carburetor before? I would start there before I started paying someone to work on it. It's not difficult, and if needed, I can talk you through it, and some other simple things to try, before you start sinking money into it.

4350 if it's stock. Rev limit on the coils will kick in.

put a tape measure on the top of the transom and measure to the bottom of the transom. short is 15''+- and tall transom is 20''+-. the prodrive in that picture is a setup for a short transom.

u cant run a short shaft motor on a tall transom boat. u can run a tall transom motor on a short transom boat, but it runs like sheet.

and.....
if they would of left that angled transom on that boat it woulda backed up un the mud 100 times better than it will now. they added that piece to keep the stern of the boat from sqatting and to pickup more speed. they woulda been a lot better off leaving it alone and just adding 3' of length to the boat, 17-20' boat does so much better than a short one with limited horsepower. of course, that's just my .02

if transom height is the issue, u can either swap out the pd or cut the transom down. if this ain't the issue, then disreguard this post!!! lol

I welded up the same thing on my hull years back and is still that way today. The reason there getting you to measure your transom is that the short shaft is too high out of the water. Its probably the carb that needs cleaning thus the bogging. But when you get that straight, you'll notice a difference not in a good way. When you get on it, the prop is going to "blowing out" because its sitting too high on the transom. Measure from the bottom of boat up at an angle to the top of transom. On a long shaft it needs to be anywhere from 18-19". not sure on short.

I figured out that the dude I bought it from had the Governor turned down as low as it could go. So my RPM's were the problem. With that being said, I turned them up and set it at 4000 (just to start out till it was warm. After getting above 2000 rpms (which was where it was set previously) I noticed some smoke in the Carb. The video shows the smoke on a warm motor. I'm guessing a blown head gasket??? Or needs to re-ringed???

And do a leakdown. Also, when you pull the valve covers to check valve lash, look on the pushrod to see if there's any sign of a blown head gasket. Will C posted pics of the difference a month or so ago as a tech tip.

It takes a leakdown test gauge set and an air compressor. The instructions usually come with the gauge set.

No. No coil limit on non-cdi. Mechanical Gov or rev limit box (which is aftermarket).

yep, that wire coming off the coil goes to the control box to ground. Its norrmally black but anyway. That coil wire, by being connected to ground, cuts fire or spark when it reaches 4350 or 4700 if you have the high rev coils. Your internals can handle it to 4700 and a little. turn up the governor and ease up the rpms. The coils should catch it roght about 4350 on your tach.

with that transom angle, u probly need a bigger roller as well so u can trim right. did you measure the transom height yet?

I would not cut that extension/square out off.

That angle is primarily for a long tail. Some of the SD's don't respond badly to it, but my experience is that it does not work well with the pd (and have heard many say the same thing). Besides the obvious boat squat, it disrupts the water flow to the prop on a pd.

The angle was there on long tail boats to help pushing the boat back over logs, etc.... It was never designed to run a SD on it. I know some will say it will work, and yes on some SD's it will work. But since someone already fixed the problem, why go backwards with the problem.

I had a boat with that so am speaking from experience, not what I heard.....

As stated, convert that motor to a tall transom, and roll.

Update.... I did a leak down test on it a couple weeks ago, and there were problems on both sides. On the left side the head gasket was blown, and the valves weren't seating very well. On the right side the valves were leaking pretty bad. So I lapped and polished the valves and seats. I also replaced the gaskets from the heads out on both sides. While I was working on it I pulled the carb and was going to rebuild it, but a new(stock) carb was the same cost as the rebuild kit was, so this was an easy decision..... I Went with th he new carb.... After doing all the work and torquing to factory specs, it runs flawlessly and smooth.

Now it's time to put it in the water and see how it does. I'm contemplating extending the transom and dropping the 4" on the mounting plate. Welding aluminum and the fabrication of the transom isn't a problem, so can anyone think of a reason not to drop the 4" that way? It would solve the "swamping" over the back problem. And add a step up at the water line. Just brainstorming options right now. Thanks for the input.

By cutting down 4" on the transom, thats alot. Ans the reason its alot is because your cutting through the main support brace for the transom. Its ususally 4" or 6" channel. Which is welded across to keep the transom from flexing. If you cut through that , then you stand the chance of some real problems with a transom flexing and cracking. Hell even if you have 6" channel used, they would only leave up with 2" of channel left for the area of the transom that will recieve the most forces upon it. I'm with them, convert the PD to a Tall or ................................. get another boat with short transom.

I'm going to give Travis at prodrive a call today and see if they have a kit available. I ask for advice because there is no reason to make mistakes, when you can learn from others that have already been down that path. I have tested this fact for years and doing it this way is usually cheaper and lasts longer. Thanks guys.
