went to grease my lower unit yesterday for regular maintence and started backing the screw out. Got 4-5 revolutions nice and easy and then its locking up. I have NEVER had this happen. its always threaded in and out with fingers to prevent cross threading it. What kind of problem do I have on my hands? |

Sounds cross threaded to me. If your seals are old, why not just remove the lower and remove the shaft, go ahead and run a tap to clean the threads, then put it together and replace the seals? Kill two birds with one stone. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

The XD lower units on the gatortail require you to take a screw out to grease it. I forgot one time and blew my seals and it was a hoe to replace lol |

well, bearing was shot. dropped a roller that made its way into the housing. scarred up my prop shaft inside the housing. FML. thank god this didn't happen during duck season. |

good news is that we were able to drill out the old screw and keep the same threads. Now just waiting for the Lower Unit rebuild kit to arrive from GT so I can get back on the water. |

update... got the LU rebuild kit and looking at the damage on the prop shaft... We initially thought one of the rollers on the bearing broke free and caused the damage. after wiping all the grease off (and seeing all the rollers in tact) we noticed the inner race on the bearing toward the prop CRACKED! What could cause this to happen? Just a bad race? I'm running a lvl 2 modded GT. I ran a huge prop for about 20 hours (hill marine 12.5x12p tulip). could all that extra prop pushed by the extra HP have put that much torque on the shaft to crack the race? We are baffled as to how this could have happened. |
