Post subject:  Reverse Issue?

Hi, took out my Mudbuddy 4400 BD HDR yesterday and the reverse wouldn't work off the trailer. It engaged and I would throttle up and nothing. I got it out on the water and tried it couple more times and still nothing. I ran the boat around for about 30 min and then tried it and it worked perfect. Is this something I should have looked at or maybe it fixed itself? My motor has close to 30hrs. Never had an issue before. Any help would be great.

Was your battery weak to when you first tried?

No battery was fine.

Doubt it “fixed itself”.

I agree with Dmax on really scrutinizing your battery. An easy answer would be it was fairly low and had trouble fully engaging the electric clutch, then you ran it and the Briggs charged your battery then it started working.

There are other possibilities, but if your wires look clean, that’s where I’d start.

Tried it again. Battery charged. Reverse not working correctly. It spins but doesn’t catch. Forward works perfect. Tried it all over the lake diff depths. Spins but won’t catch. On a weird occasion it will “catch” and reverse works perfect. 33hrs. On motor.
One family member says they may have it reverse while on plane in forward. Switched it right back. Any help appreciated.

Also, if you want to make yourself feel good that it’s not the clutch, snip the clutch wires (it’s just a Pos and Neg) and stick it straight to a battery. You will hear it engage. That will tell you it’s earlier in the system which means bad wire, ground, or switch.

I would think it's a bad switch or wire to the reverse. The battery should be ok because forward is working fine, so I would think if it has enough power for forward it should have the same for reverse.

Maybe so, but troubleshooting 101 means dont assume anything. Check it to isolate the issue. Could be something with that reverse clutch.

Here's a quick clip I made years ago showing how the magnet engages when 12v is applied.

Just a final update. It was the battery connectors that were corroded and bad. Had them all replaced. Battery tested fine. Reverse is working great once again! Thanks for all the help!
