40 Efi powerhead
Does anyone know model and type code for the 40 Efi? I have a buddy thats thinking about putting one on his 2010 gatortail. His 35 thats on it now has Calen's heads and cam and a mikuni and BPS Q. How will the 40 compare?

Re: 40 Efi powerhead
Thanks for the replies. His has been a good strong motor, but he has had the typical briggs case gasket issue from the start. Gator tail replaced a cracked rear cover with only 70 hours. It has had 2 more cracked covers after that and 2 gaskets replaced in between. The last time the cover was replaced he had a machine shop do the mods to delete the gasket and now it's leaking again. Bolts have never got loose and always had red loctite. Pretty sure it's a internal balance issue causing it because it has had several props so that shouldn't be the cause.

Could also be the 100 lbs of unbalanced shit hanging off the crankshaft...

Re: 40 Efi powerhead
That's not good. I would have thought with everything back there being machined and not just cast that it would be balanced or very close. Is the planetary known for having balance issues or it something else?

Re: 40 Efi powerhead
Is he running stock props or props that have been balanced. You would be surprised how out of balance new props are out the box, especially 2 blades

All stock 2 blade props straight from gator tail.

Might be part of your problem with vibration

Re: 40 Efi powerhead
Balanced or not, the planetary is a big chunk of rotating metal with nothing supporting the end of the PTO shaft. Theres vibration whether you like it or not. Multiple props arent going to continually cause covers to crack even if they arent balanced.

Re: 40 Efi powerhead
When I was searching for info on the 40 efi I noticed several threads about leaking cases on the 37 and 40 efi but not anything like in the past with the 35 before they did away with the gasket. So the problem is still there but not as often as before. I remember Maxxis and maybe deadbird talking about how bad some of the cranks or maybe flywheels were on some of the briggs, so he was hoping that was the problem. Any suggestions on checking everything outside the engine?

Re: 40 Efi powerhead
I’m not saying that is the culprit for him, just saying that getting a propeller balanced will help with a part of the vibration. If I would have thought that the balancing of the prop was the fix all for him, I wouldn’t have said that it may be “part of the problem”. I’m sure there are bigger issues here because even unbalanced you shouldn’t be having the problems you are having, but balancing your prop can only help while you discover the other issues.

Yeah, need to get the prop checked. I'm sure it will help.

Re: 40 Efi powerhead
He will be disappointed I. The 40efi compared to what he has from a power standpoint. It’s all I can do to not modify my new 40. Will never make 3 years before I do. Ive only had it since thanksgiving and my last motor had the same mods as your buddy, but it wasn’t as troublesome as his.

Re: 40 Efi powerhead
Thanks pooldoo. That's what he was wanting to know. It's been a good strong motor other than the case issues. I have run several other gatortails and they all had way less vibration than his. I'm sure it's a balance issue somewhere.

Re: 40 Efi powerhead
You would be shocked the difference one prop will make the other. A balanced and worked prop is heaven. I really love my 40hp.
