Post 23 Smallblock Mod Entertainment
We are about to make some pulls on a couple 23 engines. This place has given me years of entertainment, this is my way of giving something back to the forum. My kid pulled the engine off his boat today. Current specs. A .020 over stock shortblock with stock cam. Heads are stock with the exception of 1 shim under each factory 23 spring. 35 carb with 134 mains and .022 pilots. 27deg timing. Been running a couple years on a Copperhead / 1448 old rivet boat. Me and him run 27 in deep water, 29 in 3ft with little chop. Carries 3 guys about 23. Its got a homemade 2/1 pipe. In the next day or 2 we will find out what it makes on the 2/1 and a stock pipe. My guess is 27hp at about 3900. After testing we will swap longblocks to one with heads and a golfcart cam. Till then..

I’m interested to see this. I have the BPS xlite on mine but have always wondered if the 2into 1 would be better performance. You may have to share a pic of the custom exhaust if it’s a big improvement.

He got the testing done this evening. I was pretty surprised. A stock 23 makes 24 ish hp. With the 35 carb and elbow, timing advanced and a stock pipe it made 28. 4hp up from stock. With our pipe on it, it made 31, up another 3. The 2/1 makes a few more lbs of torque all they way up. It runs good up to 4k then torque fades quick. We ran this motor around 4300 with a light load, now we know it takes 36 ish lbs of torque for this boat to maintain 27/29 mph lightly loaded. Good torque at the bottom explains with this boat jumps out pretty quick then flatlines. When he gets the longblocks swapped we will test some more.

Now that i think about it i bet 1 of those horses comes from being .020 over. Hoping to hang on to 40 ft lbs till 4500 on the next one. It would be easy to make the power with a real carb and cam but scrounging spare parts around the shop is more fun to watch

Just got the testing done. 25 deg timing, made about 1 hp over the other engine up to 4k where there other one fell off. This new one carries the torque curve alot farther. 4 hp overall with alot wider power band. With a more aggressive tune i think it could pick up a few more but for now this is how its gonna roll. Looking forward to getting it back on the boat.

We got to ride today. Idles smooth as stock . Runs just like the toque curve on the dyno. Pulls smooth to 47/4800 with me and him. Stock Copperhead gearing and prop. 33 on ripple. Fun low buck project for us and for him to learn. This is a pic of the smallblock holding of his uncles bigblock at about 400’

Just an update on this rig. We did some racing at the caddo run this weekend. He won 3 of his 4 races. 2 races against a mild 37 on a light boat. Took out a 25 yammy outboard. And lost to a hot bigblock on a gtrax. Great weekend
