Mudbuddy 45HD failed leakdown test
I did a leakdown test on my 2012 Mudbuddy 45HD and shows a 25% and 30% leakage. the motor has over 300 hrs on it (tiny tach quit on me last season) It sounds like its leaking from everywhere, intake, exhaust, cylinder head and dipstick. so I am assuming the worse case that I need to replace the rings, the head gasket and the valves. I have iron mountain heads on it that were installed when I bought it used. Can I use factory valves or do I need to use the stainless steel valves from BPS? as for rings, can I use factory standard rings or do I need the .020 oversized rings? any other suggestions before I tear it apart and start swapping out parts? anything else I should do while I have it "opened up"?

Talk to Will C (Texas Mud Motors) or Maxxis (Bayou Surface Drives) on here. I would freshen up the heads, get new one piece valves, etc. Not worth half assing it (doesn't sound like you want to, either). They'll both do you right.

Re: Mudbuddy 45HD failed leakdown test
Well, I pulled a head and did a leakdown test on the other and could hear air coming from the cylinder on the "headless" one. So, I guess I'm replacing rings.

And honing the cylinders. May as well do a case gasket delete while it's apart.

Re: Mudbuddy 45HD failed leakdown test
Before 2015 or 16 i think it was (someone will come along and correct me on the irrelevant timeframe, I'm sure), Briggs used a metal gasket between the case cover and case. After that time frame, they switched to using a gasket sealant like yamabond, kawabond, etc and stopped using the metal gasket on factory engines. It requires slight machining to a couple spots to adjust for the gasket thickness no longer being there. It helps with the inevitable case leak and can be done to older engines.

Well, that aint good. Guess I'm getting new heads. The other one is fine. What really sucks is that I have to buy a pair and I cant even get a core exchange now.

Got any suggestions for an alternative to Iron Mountain?

Bayou surface drives or Texas mud motors.

Re: Mudbuddy 45HD failed leakdown test
I'd be willing to bet that he, like many that have used iron mountain and other worked heads, offered that advice because of the differences in process and experiences using both. His opinion to the OP was to go with another souce of aftermarket. Valve seats crack on Briggs heads regardless of who aftermarketed them.
