Hi guys,I'm new here. This mud motor idea has got me thinking.First of all I have never seen a mud motor. They are not common where I live.Lots of information and talent here thou. I like the idea of a surface drive unit. What I have been thinking about is building my own version ,don't laugh, using a Geo Metro car engine.I bought this little car just for the engine for 350 bucks. It has a Suzuki 1000 CC 3 cylinder engine that puts out about 50 HP @ 5500rpm and 57lbs of torque @ 3200rpm.I forget the weight but they are pretty light and compact. I have a lathe and mill and welding equipment.I am not a machinist but do enjoy the thinking and are handy at fabrication in building projects. I have an 18/52 jon boat I could test such a unit on and are considering building a welded aluminum type of jon boat about 22ft long. Is there anybody here that has built their own surface drive unit from scratch? |

Yes. Search the forum. Use google, enter keywords and end with mmt or mudmotortalk and youll find plenty of threads. Most of those that have done it left this forum. #CFFITR #mudmotor>physics |

There was a guy on the site duckhuntingchat that built a pretty cool one with a VW engine. Just did a search for it and it looks like he hosted his pictures through photobucket so it may be lost forever. That would be another site to check out though. It’s going to be tough to contact anyone now that theses forums are mostly dead. |

Welcome to MMT... Just a quick note - Torque is more important than HP when trying to get a rig going in heavy soup.... Take a look at the lil Briggs torque curve and you will see why it is the most dominant small power plant.... Lots of engines make more HP but lack the torque of the Briggs which you need at low rpms to bury a prop and get enough "hookup" to get going.... Also SDs have between a 1.2 to 1 and a 1.4 to 1 rpm reduction from the engine to the prop to help get even more torque the ones with 1.2 use less pitch on their props around 10 pitch and the 1.4 uses a 12 pitch - both have similar final drive gearing... Props - are also part of the magic so consider building "around" a particular prop design and pitch from the beginning.... Hulls - 18 x 48 is a sweet spot size - if you go longer try to stay thin - I have seen some 20 x 44 and 22 x 40 that hauled good loads and could get thru some tight places - the length helps "balance" that 300 lb motor and driver at the rear of the rig.... If I remember right - Coco the owner of GoDevil has a special camp rig that is 24 or 22 x 38 just so he can slip thru a narrow water gate to get to his camp and still carry heavy loads.... You might try to call him and chat him up a bit - nothing he has not tried over the decades and you might want his "sage" wisdom on the project.... Best of luck and send pictures of your gear for more input and our enjoyment ! |

Some great info here already on the reduction gearing. I called a guy in Fairbanks AK that sold GoDevils and built a diesel surface drive.A wealth of info there.I talked with him for an hour and a half. There is not much for mud where I am but there is a small sandy river running through our place that flows into the Fraser.I'll use the rig for moose hunting mostly on rivers or lakes. I have looked around on the internet but my computer skills aren't that great. That is how I found this site. |

I have a good start on this build.I pulled the engine from the car and it is hanging from my hoist on a chain and sitting on some planks on the floor. I'm in the process of eliminating a bunch of the wires not needed to keep the engine running.I am not sure I will keep the fuel injection.A Harley carb and a GM ignition module with just 4 wires might be the simpler way to go. Another part of the project was to cut the bell housing off the transaxle which I have completed. I do have pictures but they will not come up. |
