Post subject:  Briggs CDI vs Std. Magnetron Ignition?

Ref. Possible Ignition upgrade for older 2005 Mudbuddy 35
I was wondering about the differences/performance benefits of the two different ignition systems offered OEM on the B&S 35.

I know that engines equipped w/ the standard Magnetron ignition rely on a mechanical governor to limit RPM. I assume that the Magnetron ignition is triggered/switched by a built in Darlington Transistor circuit and has a fixed spark advance.

I have read on this forum that engines equipped w/ CDI, have RPM limit built in and is controlled by the ignition itself.
>With CDI, is the RPM limited by the mag coils or is it done by a solid state CDI ignition Module?
>Does the CDI have a spark advance curve built into it?

I have read that the CDI flywheel is preferred over the standard flywheel to achieve higher RPM with hi perf. modified engines.
>Is the CDI flywheel preferred because it is lighter weight?
>Would a complete CDI installed on a stock or lightly modified (Stage I) engine, be considered an upgrade or offer any performance or reliability benefits?
 :?:

Here is a good thread to read on that. Deadbird8 has some really good info.

Thanks JC,

You are right. Deadbird8 posted an excellent article with a thorough description of the differences between the Briggs standard Magnetron and CDI ignition systems found on B&S mudmotors.
