Hey I have to break down my Kohler engine to get to the heads and piston to try and find what broke in there. This is gunna be my first time doing this. I was wondering should I follow the disassembly steps in the Kohler manual or is that gunna be doing alot more than what I need to do? |

If you have never been into an engine of any type before then I would get onto the Kohler site. You can download entire service manuals for your particular engine. Read it backwards and forwards and see if you think its something you can tackle yourself before you attemt to. |

Well if you got the manual go for it. I would assume its correct being Kohler wrote it and provided illustrations. |

"Well if you got the manual go for it. I would assume its correct being Kohler wrote it and provided illustrations." Never asked if the manual was CORRECT. the manual shows a complete disassemble step by step, I was wondering if getting to the cylinders required breaking the motor completely down, for instance removing all electronics, fuel lines, etc. Not exactly sure whats wrong with it yet, hoping its just a piston valve or something. But the compression is 120 and 60, and one of the spark plugs is all banged up so something broke lose in cylinder I guess. |

Pull all the shrouds, exhaust, intake valve covers and anything that may be fastened to the head itself. Then rotate the crank until you are on the compression stroke of one cyl, remove the rocker arm bolts and rocker arms (there may be a little tension on the arms unless the lifters have bled down) remove pushrods, then remove the headbolts and head. Repeat for the next cyl. |

If you want to just pull the head on the one bad cyl then you don't even have to pull the intake, carb, fuel line or wiring harness. Just remove the two intake bolts for that cyl. Only slightly loosen the intake bolts on the other side. The intake will stay on while you pull the one head. |
