Been leaking for the past 100 hours(I have been tightening the 3 right bolts on a regular basis). Oil level never really moves just light oil all on and around the motor. I took out 3 of the bolts the other day and locktighted them back in but it still leaks. Do I need to fix this thing now, or can I just keep running it like it is? I am just sick of wrenching on it. |

I wouldn't worry about it as long as it's not too bad. This is a common problem with all big bloc vangaurd engines. They all do it. One option for you would be to replace your bolts with ARP studs provided by EVT along with a new cover gaset. Many people have done this and seems to be the best fix. |

I wouldnt worry about it until you are loosing a noticable (on the dipstick) amount of oil. |

I had some good success with an EVT case gasket & studs in my block.... went about 200 hrs with no leaks until I threw a rod through the side of that block. Since the rebuild I've tore this mofo apart 3 more times due to case gasket failures and a cracked sump. The last time I drilled & tapped my block for 10mm, and drilled out the sump bolt holes to barely accept 10mm socket head bolts with a real tight fit so that every one essentially acts as a dowel pin as well. Used a stock gasket with loctite anaerobic sealant. Cleaned all bolt holes & bolts real well with carb cleaner, used red loctite thread locker on the threads as well as silicone on the section of bolt that goes through the sump.... then torqued that mofo to 25 ft/lbs and put position indicator marks on all bolt heads with a paint marker. lol then I just noticed the other day I had a small leak around the oil galley ![]() |

every motor is different.........with a stage 1 i had good sucess with stock bolts and red loc but stage 2 broke every bolt i put in her and the gasket would last 10 min. If you are leaking don't mess with it till it blows............just keep some oil with ya to make it to the ramp. later |

We are having great luck now with 10mm ARP bolts and our gasket. Cover can not move. Puting about 25-28 ftlbs on the torque. When the bolts start to loosen the cover can move. When the cover moves it chews up the gasket and you have a leak. When the cover moves too much and the cover has more torque applied to it eventually something will give when the bolts won't. If the bolts give cover cracks, if the bolts up top hold then it splits the block. If both go well double trouble. ![]() |

I talked to the guy where I bought my motor from the other day. It is covered under warranty, he says Briggs has changed the gasket. He sees an assortment of results from leaks like me at 75 hrs to some with 800 hours and no leaks. I have had 3 or 4 hard impacts, but so does everybody else. As long as its not pouring out, I guess it doesn't matter. I guess I'll wait a little while and bring it in whne I see some down time coming. |
