here you go this is the 130 hp ultima engine had lots of trouble blowing belts now using carbon fiber, but still not right clutch lets go at 3/4 throttle so still pursuing gear box.

That's true going into a right turn at half throttle I can not pull the handle straight with both hands and my feet on the left side of the boat. But it sure carry's a load. Ran to camp other day with 100 gallons of diesel, two 100 quarts ice chest at 2500 rpm was cruising at 30 mph, got in shallow water coming back so it wouldn't bounce, diesel tank empty got to almost three quarter throttle and was doing 38 mph. If I could stop the boat dancing all over I know it will cross 40 with no prob.

Post Another mud viper
Back and forth, I've talked to Marty about his project and mine. I've sucessfully adapted a 1340 EVO engine on a mud buddy sport drive frame. The engine was purchased from local H-D dealer and is a replacement engine the factory is selling for worn out ones. The actual engine cost is way cheaper than the pumped-up B&S engines, but in the end it will probably balance out because of the custom fab work and time.

Right now, I've still got the starter to locate and mount, fuel feed system and exhaust. It's been at least a 6-8 month adventure with a lot of design, fit, re-design, re-fit........several times. If anyone is interested just know you are in for some serious design challenges for an engine mount, fabricating a custom flywheel for a motor that never had one, a custom starter mount, custom exhaust, custom driveshaft, custom starter gear - hell, everything is custom. But in the end, i'll have about 55-60 reliable hp delivered to the drive and the power to get me to the primo spots before the rest of the crowd.

My plan on an exhaust is two pipes into one collector with a single SuperTrap muffler on the end. And the flywheel, starter, drive shaft and drive shaft pillow block bearing to be under a cover, similar to Marty's. The motor has a 40mm Mikuni on it, so fuel delivery shouldn't be a problem. Right now, I'm not going to worry about head temps as I will mainly be running in cold temps, but a cooling fan(s) and a shroud is not out of the question.

I'll post up some pics as the project finalizes and some results of the test runs.

Post Re: mud viper born
Old hunter looks like your making lots of progress, I ended up having to do like you making a lower jack shaft and running two belts to clear the starter and mount the clutch, I also I jumped up from the 89 cu inch to the ultima 120 cubic inch which puts out 130 hp at about 6 grand but I don't run it that high at 3600 rpm its a tad over 80 hp which what I was shooting for carrries a load great and still have some hammering out stuff to do, with the jump had change the gear ratio from standard which I think was 1.18 to 1 to 1 to .95 yes the prop turns faster than the motor but still will run up to over 4 grand with a 2 blade wide blade from hoyt with as much cup could be put on it and also built up almost a inch which I think should be about a 13 dia 14 or 15 pitch. So far at 1800 I am on step, 2500 running low 30's and 3200 about 35-38 after that boat all over the place and very hard to hold on to motor. Like you said everything is custom so far the only thing that is left original is the handle and trim motor bracket and switch box every thing else is machined. Haven't figured out the clutch problem yet when I get to 3/4 it lets go. Don't know if just slipping or something electrical yet.

Marty,

I'll post a top down pic of the rear of the motor so you can see what I did. Basically I machined a flywheel using the Harley starter ring gear and attached a shaft directly to the flywheel that goes into the upper outdrive housing. The clutch is on this shaft just like its on the shaft on the Vanguards. I placed a pillow block bearing to support the drive shaft at the upper outdrive housing to keep from side loading the motor crankshaft. I think my engineering is solid and haven't had too many problems for such an ambitious project. And I'm hoping the heavy flywheel will help to reduce ignition pulses of a 45 degree engine; time will tell. Talk with you soon.

Post Re: mud viper born
O, H, I wanted to do the same but I wanted to keep the reverse and neutral and with the GT Planetary at the very end of the shaft there is a key type washer which locks it to the the shaft so I could not put a rear bearing to support it, I had to put my bearings in front and behind of the drive pulley on the jack shaft, the picture shows the first try but that's not how it ended up I ended up machining a totally new down housing 6x6 instead of 4x6 which gave me room to put the clutch into the drive housing , so now the short belt goes down to the the jack shaft drive pulley and is supported by bearings on each side then the clutch slides on from rear like a regular GT and the planetary mounts to the clutch. This is working so far but still have clutch problems and I only got about 2 hours max from belts. I now have a carbon fiber belts and going to try this. Regular rubber only got max 15 minutes and kevlar got about 2 hours. Just this morning finally got word I have a present coming in from my buddies across the pond. This is the game changer I have been working on for over two years although I will probably have to develop a clutch system to mount to the flywheel like a motorcycle or vehicle standard transmission clutch plate pressure plate because of the non smoothness of idle of a harley which will bang the dog/gear relationship but I can finally see the end of the tunnel, with this everything will be more compact and I will be able to use a 50mm wide belt if needed which should be able to handle up 150 hp if needed.

What about a ball bearing lock up clutch at the flywheel, then an FNR box after it?

Try the Goodyear Eagle NGR belts and pulley's. That is what the Top Fuel/Funny Car's use to drive their blowers. They will easily handle whatever that Harley can throw at them.

thats a bad ass motor i bet. i have a harley predator and i know what you mean by trying to hold on to it. You should try and rubber mount your handel with motor mounts with a stud on each end. I made a hadel like this for mine and it eliminates almost all or the vibration. Also you might want to think anout putting a fan on the front to keep it cool for when its hot out.

Here are the starting components BT used with the Predator and some pics on how it was set up.

I had the starter components for a few years now, seeing as I wanted to build a mud unit type rig with a HD motor, but I recently picked up a Predator frame, so there will be another winter project.

Keep us posted Mitch. Cool project I'm jelius. From the pic it doesn't look like the starter is catching much fly wheel, could be the pic.

Mitch, what ever happened with those big nasty beavertails? I remember reading about them and seeing them online when they were building them, I guess that was 04-05 or so, because we were hunting with a 27 BT long tail at the time. Never heard much talk about them or saw one in person, I always imagined that they would be impressive though.
