Post subject:  Which Oil Filter?

Just did a lot of searching and reading as I am getting ready to change the oil on my 23 GDSD. Figured out what type of oil i'm going to use, but i didn't see a whole lot on what type of filter to use. Right now there is a little short oil filter on it. Can I just buy an oil filter that goes on my truck and throw it on there?

Nope. You'll want to get the specific one for your motor. Go to Tractor Supply, they have them on the shelf sorted by manufacturer (Honda, Briggs, etc.) and size of motor.

ive been using a fram from the auto parts. no problems. it is a little longer but doesnt hit any thing. i figure it holds 1/4 -1/2 cup more oil. doesnt seem like much but when your dealing with less than 2 qts any should help. also its about half the cost. ill check and get thhe # off it.

Filter is supposed to have some type of check valve on it to prevent back flow- was told ones without will void warranty (but you would have to have an anal mechanic for that). You can get one from the tractor store- the John Deere part was same as the Briggs but cheaper. THey sell the Briggs ones at most Lowes.

I prefer the briggs filter. For a couple of buck, get the original. This lawnmower engine costs more than your car engine, for the most part,. Since these are oil and air cooled, I also added an extra oil cooler in front of the flywheel shroud. Works great, really cools the oil, which is the life blood of the engine. IMO. I just bought a case of them on ebay, got them cheap, split them with a couple guys.
