Just did a lot of searching and reading as I am getting ready to change the oil on my 23 GDSD. Figured out what type of oil i'm going to use, but i didn't see a whole lot on what type of filter to use. Right now there is a little short oil filter on it. Can I just buy an oil filter that goes on my truck and throw it on there? |

Nope. You'll want to get the specific one for your motor. Go to Tractor Supply, they have them on the shelf sorted by manufacturer (Honda, Briggs, etc.) and size of motor. |

ive been using a fram from the auto parts. no problems. it is a little longer but doesnt hit any thing. i figure it holds 1/4 -1/2 cup more oil. doesnt seem like much but when your dealing with less than 2 qts any should help. also its about half the cost. ill check and get thhe # off it. |

Filter is supposed to have some type of check valve on it to prevent back flow- was told ones without will void warranty (but you would have to have an anal mechanic for that). You can get one from the tractor store- the John Deere part was same as the Briggs but cheaper. THey sell the Briggs ones at most Lowes. |

I prefer the briggs filter. For a couple of buck, get the original. This lawnmower engine costs more than your car engine, for the most part,. Since these are oil and air cooled, I also added an extra oil cooler in front of the flywheel shroud. Works great, really cools the oil, which is the life blood of the engine. IMO. I just bought a case of them on ebay, got them cheap, split them with a couple guys. |
