pull the battery leads from the battery after cranking the motor and at idle you should be at 12volts at the the leads but when you rev the motor you should increase to around 13 to14vdc at 3000 rpm... thats not exactly what its supposed to be but if the voltage does increase with an increase rpm's then your regulator is working. check some of the old postings for rectifier issues to get some more accurate info.

Here's how to check the VR on a Briggs- I expect the Kohler is similar.

you can run the motor without the battery hooked up if it's going over 2000 rpm. anything under that, it's got to be hooked up. so my unscientific answer to your question is this... if it won't run by itself over 2000, then you've got some problems with your stator thingy.

If you disconnect the battery while you are running it will close the fuel solenoid on the carb and kill the engine.

You can check the voltage on the cables at the battery without disconnecting using a meter.

I had this same problem with mine once. If you look at your motor from the front, on the left screwed on to the top cover there is a wire plug. Mine was corroded inside and I could not seeit. may want to unplug and clean both ends. Cost me about $60 for find out. Good luck!

guessing will only cost you money do not throw parts at it get a scematic ant a volt meter diag. find the problem and fix it

start by disconnecting all connectofs 1 AT A TIME THEN INSPECT THEIR INTGERTY IF OK RECONNECT MOVE TO NEXTCONNECTOR IT ALL CONECTORS R OK THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO USE THE METER TO DIAG THE PROBLEM
2 MANY USE LESS PARTS R BOUGHT AND R URETURNABLE ON THE ELETRONIC SIDE OF THESE ENGINES WORSE CASE CALL ENGINE MANUFACTURE CUSTOMER SERVICES DEPT THEY R MORE THEN WILLING TO HELP WALK YOU THREW THESE ISSUES TO FIND PROBLEM

JUST DONTTHROW PARTS AT YOUR ENGINE 75% OF TIME THROWING PARTS WILL NOT BE COST EFFECTIVE (AND PISS U OFF)

Pretty sure I now know what the problem is. I put a volt meter on the rectifier to test the stator and the stator shows to be bad. Gonna put in a new stator and see if that helps. Thanks for all the info!

2. Remove connector from rectifier regulator.
With engine running at
3600 RPM, measure AC voltage
across stator leads using an AC
voltmeter.
2. If voltage is 28 volts or more, stator is OK. Rectifier regulator
is faulty. Replace the rectifier-regulator.
If voltage is less than 28 volts, stator is probably faulty
and should be replaced. Test stator further using an
ohmmeter (Test 3).

You used this test correct?
