Wedges
OK, so I got the mods from Hoyt and discovered a bad porpoising problem. I got GT to weld me 2 wedges and a keel strip for the sliding. The keel strip works great, bites good in a slide. The wedges on the other hand stopped the porpoising, but robbed me of about 4-5 mph. I usually run in the center hole on the transom clamp, moved it to bottom and still can't get the mph. The top position would be too high I believe. Thinking about sacrificing the bounce for the speed. Please advise!!
ps - the porpoising only happens when I'm by myself (which is rare)

Re: Wedges
If the wedges stopped the bouncing, then you would want to raise the motor to the next hole or trim it up. If that doesn't work take a little off the wedges with grinder. Moving it to the lower hole will just make it plow more. Good luck! BTW, how much speed did you pick up with the mods?

Re: Wedges
repositioning the weight( battery, gas tank, etc) in the boat could help. Those guys at GT know what they are doing you might want to check with them again and tell them your problem.

Re: Wedges
Wedges - are bad - pure drag - take them off....
Find a way to balance your boat - move the battery up front or some other weight re-distribution.... Maybe a bigger ice chest !

Re: Wedges
Thanks for the replies guys. Then I have 2 more things to do. Move the pin to the highest hole and try it. If that don't work, then I'll be grindin the wedges off.

Re: Wedges
My buddy has a boat with a bad porpoising problem and he found a big chunk of sheet lead that he would put on the bow for solo runs,he called it his friends.

Re: Wedges
Put it on the high pin. Only thing is when you get in some thick shit it needs to go back down. As for as then bounce ad a nother tank of gas to the front. or some other weight. if the wedges are slowing you down that much weight till you get in some shallow water or mud it will push the front even more down

Re: Wedges
get a grinder and start grinding on the wedges. take off enough material till the speed comes back and the bouncing stops. find the happy middle ground. problem solved.

Re: Wedges
My 1660 Gatortail porpoised some by myself until I moved my trolling motor battery up front and got a 9 gallon tank up front instead of a 6. Haven't had any problems lately but I rarely run alone/unloaded. If you don't run alone a lot, I wouldn't be worried about it.

Re: Wedges
So what is your point - other than rudeness - in his case the wedges were a bad solution to a simple problem of weight re-distribution.
Almost every post agreed that in his case he did not need or want them.
And nothing "will solve every problem you have or had" - except maybe selling the rig.

Gigafowl, you sometimes remind me of a wedge........ the simplest form of a TOOL.

Re: Wedges
even addin weight to the front isnt always a problem solver to gain speed back...may stop the nose from bouncin but also may not gain your speed back because you are forcing the nose down without lifting the rear of the boat out of the water more
like i said not ALWAYS a problem solver but should do the job
