17" sides? Sounds like a terrible idea.

What's wrong with it?

A lot of ppl run 18" sides and 17 is only 1" difference. As long as you're not running a lot of big water or stumps I don't see much wrong with it.

2-4" difference in side height is a lot, but not 1"

Also a lot would depend on length and width. I have 16" sides on my little 1336 and sometimes it's a little sketchy but not horrible and it's a pretty tippy boat. Wider the better for shorter sides.

The boat would be a 17x42

It may work for your application, but you have to make that decision. I know for a fact that I would have sunk a 17x42x17 a couple times this year (damn near sunk a 19x48x24 skiff). If it works for you and you can get it for a good price then go for it. But I sure as hell wouldn't build a new hull with 17" sides.

i had a 1644 gatortrax with 18" sides and will never own another one with low sides, it makes it a pain to turn and water not try to come in. i almost sunk it several times making sharp turns at low speeds. 21" is a low as i would have.

Just ad on to the sides. It's not hard to do at all. I wouldn't put a 35 mm on a boat that size. With it sitting dead in the water with you sitting in the back you'll only have about 4" of freeboard. Plus a narrow boat with a heavy motor will always be tipsy.
