Post subject:  Building my own boat advice

I have ordered some materials to start on my own boat and wanted to get some advice on materials to use on the transom. I'm planning on a plain 1750 .125 5086 hull. .100 floor, straight frontend without the back deck. I am putting a 4400BD EFI on it. I already have some 2x4 rectangular tube .25" thick wall and am wondering if a piece of that going horizontally at the top and 2 pieces going vertical in the middle will be enough? or overkill??

Also on a 6' rake how do you figure the radius of the cut?

And if I put floatation foam in the floor what kind do I need and where do I get it

And where do you get hydroturf 50" wide? All that I find is narrow pieces

Any advice would be appreciated
thanks.

What is the best radius to use? Simple radius or variable curve radius? How much will it affect performance??

what type of macine are u welding with? is pierce aluminum bending it?if so they are a wealth of knowledge.are u cutting with circuler saw or do u have plasma ?do you have a lot of aluminum welding experiance?

I'm using a Lincoln mp350, getting all of my aluminum from Aluminum&Stainless in New Orleans, I checked with pierce but they were more expensive and they don't deliver to me 4.5 hours away. I have a little experience with welding, I built a 5'x10' aluminum trailer last year, I also have a plasma but figured I could get a better cut on the rake by using a circular saw??

Post subject:  Re: Building my own boat advice

A skill saw with a carbide tip wood blade is handy!! I use it more than my plasma.

Not saying the way I rig my rake up is right but this is way I do it. I tack my sides on all the way to where the rake starts, I go about 6'6" to 7'6", depending on size of boat. Then I pull the bottom up to my desired height, about 3"-4" depending on the size of pipe that will be on the front. Then tack the side to the bottom at the bow. After you get a few tacks on the inside of the hull going up the rake, you can take a plasma and cut the side off right up against the bottom. Hit it with a flap wheel and weld it!

The bottom thickness depends on what you run. If you run strait mud or open water 1/8 will work fine. But if you hit any stumps I would go 3/16.

The way you explained the transom should work fine! Just make sure you have some strong gussets from the sides to the transom.

No sure about the turf!!

Can I use 4043 wire or do I need 5356. I used 5356 on my trailer and I never could seem to get a real consistent perty bead. Somebody thought 4043 would make a nicer bead????

Post subject:  Re: Building my own boat advice

Everything I've read says your supposed to use 5356 but I've built a few boats out of 4043 and never had a problem out of it.

It lays a lot better and it puddles up a lot better than 5356.

I am trying to figure out a way to bend my sides up. Is it ok would it work to heat the aluminum with a torch to bend it up around my 4" pipe I have clamped to the table? I want a rounded chine. Or is there a better way? I thought if I could do like maybe only 5' at a time somehow I need to transition to a square bend where the rake starts so I can weld it???

I wouldn't heat it. Could wind up screwing up the strength if you got it too hot. I would see if you can find someone local with a long enough brake or roller and get it done right.

2 cuts and it looks like a boat, awesome!
If you had 4 big pipes you could hbrace the inside two. Somehow lock down the outside two then roll a diesel up over the insde hbrace to press the aluminum ,,, yea that idea got out of hand quick

I would not bend it yourself unless you understand the grain of the material.

If you are in south LA you need to take it to someone that has a 20' brake and let them either put you a round or triple taper chine in that hull. Only other option is cutting the sides and weld them to the bottoms and have a square chine.

I know nothing of aluminum welding or boat building, but will say you got some good looking helpers.

Post subject:  Re: Building my own boat advice

What about partially cutting through the aluminum on the lengthwise outside and pushing the sides up. Them weld the score to strengthen it up. Since your wanting a round chine that would not work. Just throwing that out.

Just read your post. Your wanting to build a round chine boat I assume, shoot me a PM and I'll fill you in on how to go about getting the chine and sides right.

Got the sides bent up most of the way today, I welded a pipe on the end of a loader bucket and pressed it down between a concrete cattle guard, the loader didn't have enough weight so we had to press down on the loader bucket with 2 boom trucks

I'm impressed that worked that well. Good job! I would tack temporary braces on the top to get it squared up from there.

Did the chine turn out pretty close to how you wanted?

Man, I wish I knew how to weld.
Its badass to me to actually build your own boat.
No matter how it comes out, id be proud of that thing right there.

How do most guys weld the floor to the longitudinal stringers? Do you just drill bout 3/4" holes and fill them back in with weld????

Author:  cb5331 [ Thu Jul 20, 2017 9:57 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Building my own boat advice

I would say "most" don't weld they floor in, they rivet it.

Author:  Darryle [ Thu Jul 20, 2017 10:51 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Building my own boat advice

I used countersunk 10-32 screws and tapped the stringer. I used cleco clips to hold it in place as I went. This allows me to remove it to clean under there.

Cleco Clips:

If your dead set on welding the floor in, I've heard of a few builders cutting slits about 1/2" wide and 3 or 4" long in the floor then welding that to your stringers.

I tried drilling 1/2" holes and welding mine down but didn't hold for very long. Since then I use 3/16 stainless rivets about 6" apart.

I done both slits and holes(damn right) on a 24 ft Seaark used for commercial fishing. The floor is seal welded in. A lot of work however the floor is still welded down and solid. My plateboat has all slits welded down to the cross bracing. I like the welded in floor.
