Post Trouble Getting on plane Tracker 1542 - 23 mud buddy HD mini
New guy here..
I've had a hell of a time finding pertinent information searching this site; but if any one has relevant info I'll be glad to read it!

My troubles are that I have a new 1542 tracker, and an older mud buddy hd mini (no clutch) I bought the mini with a 14hp motor, have since put a 23hp on the frame. I'm running a new 11x10 mud buddy prop, and I have not changed gears from the 14, so it's still that stock drive ratio.

I'm not getting any kind of speed (10mph, maybe) with myself and one other in the boat with a very light hunting load. I only run in about a foot to 4 inches of water and very soft mud. I'll buy the not getting speed or a plane in the mud, but I feel I should be moving lots better in when the boat is 100% floating.

I'm mostly looking for suggestions on things to check or change around if anyone has any suggestions.

Is your boat a mod v? if it is, i think i have the same hull. I have a 18 copperhead on mine. complete turd! I got my boat to bump 24 earlier this summer solo with no gear at all. with my adult son (180#) and very light hunt load i barely can get it to hit 17 mph, and takes forever to get there. talked with another guy running a modded 23 copperhead and he said when he had that same hull, also a turd. changed to better hull and was able to get much better results.

Not much surface area there on a 1542...... The more surface area, the easier to plane out. Plus you are not running a true mud hull which will hurt performance.

Where are you from? Being from Minnesota, I have the same problem. I'm considering having a hull made by Copperhead.

I'm no expert, but you may also be dealing with a transom angle problem.

I think I would check with mud buddy. ask them about transom angle, gear ratio, and prop size. there are maybe some guys on here that could help you with "shimming" your motor to get better angle if its not close. good luck man! I'm out of ways to help. I was never very knowledgeable anyway.

something isnt right there. I have a 1542 flat bottom alumacraft with a 23 hp copperhead, and it does 29mph with just me and nothing else. Not BSing speeds, the boat only weighs 200#. Make sure your transom height/angle are correct, fresh prop, propper RPMs etc.

The question I didn't see asked was, What's your rpm's at your best speeds?

rpm's tell you a lot about whats going on with a boat/motor.

What's the rpm? Is your engine properly trimmed? That thing should be flying just as (will be free) stated. You don't technicially need a mud hull. Mud hulls are usually heavier and do hurt performance with the shear weight of them. That being said mud hulls do provide better transom angle, smoother bottom, square chime, round chime or whatever chime for better turning etc... etc..

In my opinion... Their is definitely a problem with the Rpms, the gear ratio, or trim. (He says the prop is new)
Install a tiny tach and Check Rpms at wide open throttle while in the boat and underway. (Under load)
Check Rpms then we'll know if the engine is running as it should be.

I just wanted to follow up, It was way too geared down! I changed the top pulley and immediately gained 11mph. By myself with a pretty heavy hunt load I run 21. Thanks for the help and suggestions everyone!
