Later this year, I will be in the market for a new rig. I've pretty much got my mind made up on what I want as far as motor goes, which is as 27HP backwater long tail, but I need some advice on boats. I am looking for a 15/44 or 46, and I want an actual mud boat, not just grandpa's old John boat. If I can't find a decent used one, I'm prepared to buy new.. Which brings me to my main point: If I have one built, without a bunch of bells and whistles, what can I expect to pay for a complete boat and trailer, and who would you guys recommend having build it? I'm looking for something similar to this Venom 1546, I really like the look of it. My main requirements are that it have a 3/16 bottom, extended front deck, and 21" sides |

Call Pete @ WC Customs in Tyler and get a quote from a boat builder. Then call Uncle J and get a quote from a boat builder. |

Why a 27hp motor instead of a 35 or 37? |

I've emailed several boat builders, including Venom and WC, but it's the weekend, and a long one at that, so I don't expect a reply for a few days. I'm in no hurry anyway. I'm active duty USMC, and I won't even be able to take leave and go home until September if I'm lucky, and that's if I'm not deployed at the time. Depending on what kind of quotes I get back, I may end up having to find a used boat and trailer, but I am kinda dead set on having a new motor. I'm saving everything I can until the fall and paying cash for whatever I end top getting, because I hate paying a damn loan payment every month. My current rig is a 12x32 alumacraft with a 7hp SPS swamp runner longtail; my little brother will be 13 this year, and I plan to pass that little rig to him as his first one and move myself into something a little bigger. |

If you're making long commutes in stumpy water I'm curiouswhy you're after a LT instead of a SD motor? Not saying it's a bad choice just wondering. |

A 27, or even a 24, will be more than enough for what you want, and shouldn't have any issue staying under 9k. #CFFITR #TheGhostBoat #whoneedsphysicsihaveamudmotor |

It would. We ran a 24 Honda on a 1546 xpress for years. I'd suggest the 27, but the 23 would still be enough, especially if you never or rarely run more than 2 people. Longtail like longer/narrower combos better than shorter wider, so I'd suggest a 16 or 1744 or 46, but a 1546 is a good size for a longtail in that range. #CFFITR #TheGhostBoat #whoneedsphysicsihaveamudmotor |

I ran a 20hp Honda LT on a 1548 for a couple years all over East Tx lakes and it did the job. My current setup is a little better though for both speed and load carrying. I have carried 4-5 guys and gear and while it drops some speed it still gets up and runs with it. If you want to drive a SD when you come home on leave I'd be glad to throw you the keys to mine. The GDSD has a lot of the same handling characteristics of a LT, so if you're used to that, it will be an easy transition. Used GDSD rigs can be had in your price range if you're patient as well. And from a Leatherneck from a few years back, thanks for what you're doing. Semper Fi brother. |
