Currently running on a 1648 MV. Poor boy special. I got the boat for $500 and motor for $600. All I had to do was clean carb. Get a new air filter, air filter retainer, governor spring, and changed the oil and spark plugs for good measure. Not bad for $1100 but the bottom of the boat is beat and i am only getting 18 mph empty. The boat is plenty stable but with the V have to stand dead nuts center to keep it from listing causing tiller torque. I think a flat bottom boat would be a better fit. For the money I was looking at an Alumacraft 16/48 or Lowe standard production jon boat. If I have to money after season maybe looking at an Alweld or other custom brand. I like how the V parts gathered grass and cattails. The Alweld mud FV has really caught my eye. Some have suggested a 44 over a 48. Looking for input. Overall though I can make my set up get me through this duck season. |

Go longer. 17 or 18, anything between 44 and 54 would do well with a 35 on the back. A 1648 is better than a 1644 for sure, but longer would be a better size, regardless of width. No need for a fancy mud hull. Longtails like length. Any flat welded hull will do the job. Arlon with backwater inc runs his big longtails on a 175something alweld (i think) and it runs great. He can run whatever he wants and has even gone so far as to put that big rascal on a flats boat. Thats what he chooses. The godevil boats aren't stupid expensive, and prodigy or uncle J can probably put together an open floor plan for reasonable, and they'd last longer with .125 than the thinner boats. I have a 9 yr. old 1648 Alumacraft riveted hull jon, which I ran a 29 HP GD longtail on. We moved the rear bench seat forward 16" inches, really helped balance the boat. Went to a surface drive MB 45 and it handles it fine. Getting old, easier on me to set when under way, only reason I switched. |

Adding pods vs freight of a bigger boat should be a wash. Dont add pods even if you get the 1648. Itll do the job as is. #CFFITR #TheGhostBoat #whoneedsphysicsihaveamudmotor |

I’ve priced the alweld mud series. I realize you may not have a custom builder nearby but I think it would be wise to look into a very basic custom hull, just so u can get a .125 boat. As mentioned already. for example these boats were selling for $4000 as is. I thought it was a heck of a deal. This was in 2016 though Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
