Post Facelift & Re-Power
So my mudmotor went bye bye. I figured now was a good time for a little nip and tuck before I hang an outboard. I figured I’d also get a little mini build thread going on here since I like those and this place has been stale lately.

1854 Gatortail boat that I purchased New in 2015. I pulled all my sears fake turf up off the floor and got to sanding, peeling stickers off etc. I also fixed any loose rivets that we’re holding the floor down.

We rolled the boat off the trailer and onto barrels, which worked pretty dang slick.

Little bro does paint and upholstery so I decided he was qualified to perform the work while I drank beer and yelled.

We hit it with two coats of flat khaki enamel that we thinned out and added hardener to do it would spray. I found a paint that they also sell in spray paint cans for easy touch up.

Hydroturf is on order. I’ll update when that comes in. Planning to use the 3M Super 90 adhesive instead of contact cement.

Boat goes to the dealer on the 6th for a jackplate and motor hang.

Turf should have been delivered today. I’ll update when we get that installed. Then I’ll post again when the jack plate and F70 are installed.

I’m thinking between that, a re wire, a new motor and a jacker and it’ll feel brand new also.

Thanks.

I’m going to re run all the wiring etc this winter also. I’ll throw that on this same thread.

I should have initial tests with the new motor after next weekend.

Post Re: Facelift & Re-Power
Once upon a time...I hit a T post. So while it was easy to take off the trailer I put it back on barrels. Then I sanded down the dented area and the drag mark. Then I used the JB Weld “water weld” product to fill in the textured area. This wasn’t a structural fix. The drag mark and dent was tearing up my bunk slides.

I pressed the stuff on flat as I could and let it cure. Then I sanded everything down flat and smooth.

Seems ok, seems hard. Hopefully it’ll last a little while.

While you have it off the trailer, slap some gatorglide on it bro. It will help that repair stay protected and covered. Looking good though, looks like you are doing it right

I’m not going to do gator glide. I won’t be in veggies anymore since I’m going back to the outboard. It would protect my fix a little, but I’m not that worried. I also couldn’t order GG and apply it in time before it goes to the dealer.

I’m hoping that if I do everything the right way now...that I won’t have to do it again for a very long time.

I use my boat a lot, especially for up here. So I’m particular about it being how I like it.

I’m happy with the refurbish so far.

Getting things put back together. Won’t get to run it til Saturday. Went with the Atlas Micro Jacker and I believe it has 5” of life on it. With the plate all the way up and the motor all the way down, there is 10” of motor under the boat. That is with everything mounted on the lowest holes.

You forget how relatively tiny an outboard is until you see one where a SD usually is.

No kidding, I’m anxious to start it and let it idle. And then call somebody and have a normal conversation.

I was initially worried that it would be too big, but it’s smaller and lighter than the GTR.

I’m not hoping to go too terribly fast, I don’t think it’ll handle that well. I’m hoping to get a prop that will top out somewhere around 35 or so, but will plane a big load.

My Yamaha 90 tunnel rig - worked best with a 3 blade Stiletto 15 pitch
the 17 pitch version was faster but didnt spin up with "camp loads"
of lumber and gear... At 5000 rpm ran mid 30s...

Oddly the 14 pitch four blade - sucked.... It caught "air" and did not
like to be surfaced so it was only usefully in the full down position and
it did not push loads as well as the 3 blade on that rig...

This has a 15p factory 3 blade on it. I’ll see how that does to start.

Did you find one that you liked when you were running one?

If I can avoid buying a bunch of different wheels I’d be happy.

Man I cant be for sure exactly what mine was. Powertech for sure, 3 blade with some cup, 15P I believe. Ran around 38-39 on an 1848, and would plane any hunting load imaginable.

Ok, that would be my starting guess. I’ve got to get re-familiar with this thing before I start experimenting. I’ll see how this 15p does and if that feels about right I’d pick up something like you mentioned.

The Yamaha Stiletto brand three blade stainless has a pretty aggressive cup from the factory and
would run surfaced so high that motor would overheat cause pickups were out of the water...

Put a water pressure gauge on your wish list - you can get away with 30 to 40 seconds of
lo pressure and adjust to keep from getting the alarm and motor limiter that cuts power
which is standard on the Yamaha... Dont bother with water temp gauge - the pressure gauge
gives better advance warning....

Yes, that is on the wishlist. I need to gab up a place to mount gauges. Thinking a standard analog tach and the water pressure gauge.

Does anybody know if you can get an analog tach that shows an hour reading also?

BoT goes in the water for the first time tomorrow.

Boy, I’m gonna hammer on some pike in cold water

I have been pumping that primer bulb like a bastard to draw fuel into my line before I start the motor tomorrow, but it doesn’t want to prime up. I’ve got the tank vented, not sure what the deal is. I ran all new fuel line and installed a new tank.

Well it was windy as shit...awesome.

Motor got a couple hours of low speed idle and a little run time on it. It seems to hammer out of the hole and is very quiet.

I’m getting bad prop chatter at low idle which is extremely aggravating. I’ll call the dealer on Monday and see if we can try a different prop or try one of the flo torq IV hub kits.

Otherwise I’m pretty happy, just a little trouble shooting to do.
