Post subject:  Gator Trax hull pitting
2011 Gator Trax Marsh Series 1750 w/ hunt deck. Found pitting all over on bottom of the hull, one area leaking. Freshwater use only, no onboard charging system besides a system made by original owner that allows battery to charge off towing vehicle. Treated trailer bunks with heavy duty plastic covers in excellent condition. I’m second owner and bought boat 2 months ago. I know the first owner well and he took immaculate care of this boat, thus, I never inspected the hull when I purchased; my mistake.

The boat was gently used in my opinion by 1st owner. Heck, the 2011 black death had 34 hours on it when I purchased. The boat was kept in heated storage its entire life. I am having a hard time understanding how a hull from a company I’ve heard so much about can have this pitting issue after 8 years of gentle freshwater use. Cheap overseas aluminum? WTF!

Any one familiar with this? Input please and thanks. If this has been discussed somewhere else please help me out, I searched and didn’t find much.

call them, they have a lifetime warranty on their hulls. Atleast see what they will do

That had been done already. Was told warranty for marsh series hull is 1 year for the 1st owner. They suggested gator glide.

Looks like this will be my first and last Gator Trax.

Gator trax suggested gator glide to fix pitting and a leak on a hull they built? Wow. Times must be hard down there.

Could be on-board electrolysis from the charging system. Boat needs to be properly grounded. Is the pitting where it sets on the bunks or all over?

If you're going to use the GatorGlide to insulate the bottom of the boat you need to treat it first. I would sand it down best you can and then maybe use a wire wheel. "A stainless wire wheel "you do not want to use a carbide wire wheel you'll create a battery on the bottom of your boat. clean the pits out the best you can and then use vinegar and water solution about 30 to 40% vinegar and the rest water, that will eat some of that corrosion out of the pits that you can't reach with the wheel. I would wash it a couple of times and then clean it good soap and water, let it dry then wipe with acetone. Then I would use the gatorbase and then G2.
I don't like the plastic bunk covers or pressure-treated against aluminum that also causes pitting and the plastic bunk covers create a lot of wear. I just put down to Spruce 2 by 8 on my air boat trailer after 8 years with gatorglide on the old bunks. call me anytime

So if my google’ing is correct, installing a sacrificial anode made of magnesium should help. If this is true, anyone know how to determine how big and where the anode should be installed on a GT hull?

Pitfalls of installing an anode? Does it work? Who has em’?

I would solve the underlying issue before adding that. Pitting happens, but it's a rare thing in a freshwater only boat, so something's going on worth figuring out. Then you can add the anode for peace of mind.

Battery hooked to motor, black to negative, red to positive. Dont ground shit to the boat. At all.

Yep, electrolysis don't ground to the boat, fresh water, salt water , bunks, none of that matters. Don't transfer through the hull itself.

I used the wrong term, not electrolysis, electrolytic corrosion is what I was thinking. "Stray current" passing through the hull. Could be a chaffed wire somewhere or bad ground or neutral allowing the hull absorb and transfer voltage.
