Hello, This is my first post. I have a 1544 Alweld mod v boat with a 23 hp mud buddy surface drive. I recently moved the gas tank and battery from the front of the boat to the back because they took up too much space for duck hunting. I took the boat out for a test run assuming that I would have issues. The boat porpoises and the ass sat too low. I’ve ordered float pods but am just now seeing that float pods and surface drives are not a good idea. I’m kinda stuck here. Should I try the pods? I’ve also thought about cutting a rectangle out of the front deck to store the gas and battery up there. I believe it might be filled with foam though not certain. Any suggestions are much appreciated, if I’m posting in the wrong place, go easy on me. |

Put the weight back up front, these boats need the load distributed evenly. Did it run fine with the tank and batteries up front? if so, there is your answer. |

back in the day i owned a 1448 alweld mod v boat. best thing i ever did was put a hatch on the front deck for storage and put the gas tank up against the front deck. it freed up tons of room. flotation foam was not my priority, but you do whatever u want to. pods is just a band-aid for a short boat. lol good luck. |

Your boat is too short for all that wt in the back. It'll squat bad with you, battery and fuel back there and you'll have a hard time getting on step. Put them back up front and cut out a portion of the wasted deck space. The amount of any flotation you lose might be a compromise but if it's truly a shallow water rig, are you really worried about sinking?? If you want space and performance, you have to balance the wt. |

For you guys recommending cutting into the deck, is the foam hard to remove? Did you cut into the top of the deck or the side of the deck facing the stern? |

If you cut top, you'll need to add a hatch. Most will cut the vertical piece "as you stated looking from the stern". the foam can be a pain get some beer, chisels, other assorted tools and dig it out. A pressure washer can help knock it apart and off the aluminum. Either way you will lose some unneeded weight, and have a storage section for the tank and battery/life jackets |

i just cut out the hatch that i wanted, removed the foam, welded in some framework, and put the origional peice i cut back on with a piano hinge. i didn't ask my momma if it was hard, i just did it!! lol good luck. |

You can cut foam out with a sawzall. If you have opened up your front deck and are staring down at the foam, stick a sawzall down there and cut the foam in a crosshatch pattern. Then angle the blade in and take some cuts and you will see the foam will come out in wedges. Easier than chipping it out. It ain't hard. Once you start doing it you will see what I mean. |
