Post subject:  Newbie Questions

I've been poking around on this site for a while. I'm ready to buy a rig. Ive been hunting rice fields for the pass 6 years with limited success. Every time I hunt marsh/water i have much more luck. Anyway, I have a couple general questions and appreciate the help.
What are the benefits and draw backs to:
1. Round vs square chines
and
2. short vs tall transom

thanks

The square chine will draft less, track better at lower speeds, and are slightly faster. The disadvantage is that a square chine will slide at high speeds while trying to turn, this can take some getting used to.

Round chine will turn better while running but at idle it is hard to hold a line, and they draft a little more water.

There are no advantages to a low transom unless you have to pass under a bridge like this one on a high tide like during teal season.IMGP1477.JPG

1. i've always had square chines. they slide more in the turns and supposedly draw less water. i have ridden with people who have round & tapered chines and they didn't seem to have any problems in the shallows. added benefit of the round / taper chine is the ability to maneuver a hell of a lot better in de shallow water / mud.

2. personally, i think TALL transom is the only way to go!

thanks for the replies. one of you says tall vs short transom is no difference. the other says tall is only way to go. whats the difference in the two options?

Simple.

Short transom= lots of water over the strern everytime you slow down.

Tall Tansom = Hardly any water if any over the transom.

Go tall or you will spend alot of time wishing you did. Unless you get a hunt deck type transom which breaks the wave before it hits the transom and you get less back wash. I like a square chine and don't feel handicapped by slidding. A little stick time solves that issue.

OK, so its simply a matter of water coming over the transom when slowing down. Their are no performance differences at all? I don't like water in my boat so I'll try to go tall for sure. Either that or never slow down, haha. Speaking of those huntdecks, do yall think they are worth the extra money?

Dude, read my review of my rig. Its well worth it. See my signature. I would never buy another rig without one!

The huntdeck is really nice to have. There's a lot of added benefits with having one.

people who know better run a tall transom boat. it don't get wash over the stern when u slow down and will take a bigger wave on rough water. there is no downside. if there is a bridge u can't get under, make a ramp and jump over. :D

as far as huntdecks go, it keeps the water/mud out of the boat while in reverse with a beltdrive.

Short tramson SUCKS. I got 1648 pd with tapered chines and short transom. Sunk the boat twice both with water over back. Once was submerged object high sided boat at low speed, second was shut motor down to fast and coasted into beaver house( I was not driving) and rode up the house a little and water came over back. Price on Boat was cheep, it was a Waterfowl Mag. demo boat with 4 hrs on it. Got it 3 years ago for 2500. Next one will def be Tall transom and tall sides. But with 2 kids and wife, that might be a while. Need her to divorce me. HA HA.
But poker is right little stick time and chines dont realy matter. Driven both and like each.
