Post Custom prop work...
Anyone ever had it done and were you happy with it?

Coming from the world of bassboats and tweaking of props all the time is making me think about talking to my bassboat prop guy about tuning one up to my specifications.

I am thinking about dropping pitch and adding cup to get the boat to carry a load better. I have a 17x54 ProDrive w/ 36hp and it does about 23-24 w/ 2 guys and dog loaded to hunt. I am not real pleased with how it acts with 3 guys, dog and all the gear. I don't care a single bit about speed, when I sold the last bassboat I was done with speed. I am just wanting the boat to get on step faster and carry the extra weight of a guy better.

Your thoughts? Feel free to tell me I'm a dumbarse, I have only owned this boat a year and definitely a rookie at the stick.

I have tried a couple different props and notice a little difference. If you really want to to get on step faster put some Mods to the motor. Start with Heads and Exhaust and go from their. When I did mods to my motor I wasn't needing speed either you will gain some but I bet I can carry 4 guys like you carry 1.

First thing is get the outboard thinking out your head!! These are 35-36 hp motors and they are made to run on the surface. You can get away with a lot on a 200 hp outboard but these are motors are very sensitive to loads and stuff. I see most brands run well with stock props because they did the testing to get them their!!

Interesting to hear y'all say that. I had stayed away from the whole mod game because I understood it to lessen the reliability of the engine??? That a false persona or is it just how much you mod it?

Thanks for the advice, I do appreciate it.

The truth is a modded motor is probally more reliable then a stock one. Take the heads off your motor and look at the valves I bet you can see dayligh through em when they are suppose to seal tight. The exhaust lets your engine breath better. The mikuni carb and intake also let more fuel/air into the engine none of this is bad. You are probally hurting your motor more now trying to push such a big load. The motor is topped out tongue hanging and its putting more strain on the engine. You could put a few mods to it and run half throttle and get the same performance you get now at full throttle . I have 200 hours on my mods now thats Heads, Cam, Carb, Exhaust,. Aside form the normal maitnence it runs awesome. I'm still learining alot about these motors too. I'm sure some of the guys who have years of modded motor will say the same thing. If you aren't trying to push 6000 rpms outta your motor you will be fine with some light mods.

I think the reliability comes only if you keep them 4300 and below!!

Okay, thanks guys...sounds like I need to start looking for some heads and a new exhaust. It came with a stainless factory designed (appears anyway) exhaust.
