Post GTR 40xd prop talk
I’ve been running a few props and I figured I can post on here the results for your viewing.
Stock GTR 2 blade - good hole shot and load carrying with a top end speed of 30 to 31 mph. I noticed a decent amount of vibration. When idling, the motor would shake a little side to side.

Same GTR 2 blade balanced, polished, semi sharpened and cup added. Far better performance all around. Top end speed 32 to 33 MPH and the vibration is gone. When idling the side to side motion of motor is gone. One side of prop was working far more than the other when stock. I’m very impressed with this version of the prop. I added double cup.

Stock GTR 3 blade - zero vibration with a top end speed of 32 to 33 mph. The prop gets hull on step in very low speeds. The ability to carry a load is not as good as the 2 blade but still good enough to use as needed. This prop has good hole shot. It clearly is a good fishing prop and the lack of vibration will allow your motor to last longer.

Mercury 3 blade worked and stock - I got 34 to 35 out of this prop but the hole shot is complete junk and it struggled to carry a decent load. I’m not a fan of this prop at all on a stock 40. They do seem to work well on worker modded motors.

All props tested with a cut skeg. After cutting my skeg, I gained 1 to 2 mph on 2 blade and 2 mph on 3 blade. I’m sending my 3 blade to be worked next week and we shall see how that runs. I’m most likely running my 3 blade prop until duck season. The 2 blade is for duck season in serious tough conditions as well as heavy loads.

Can you post a pic of how you cut the skeg please?

I'm trying to decide what to do with my 2 blade prop that has a ding in it. If it's not too much, I'd like to get it balanced, sharpened, etc like you say above. I'm also not sure if I should add cup and if so, how much. Also, who did your prop work?

Thanks!

Fast Eddie did this one because his brother Baggy was closed. He did a really good job. I usually use Baggy. Post a photo of your said prop.

Corners were cut with that prop. If you notice, you can still see the balancing marks from Either a grinding wheel or a reckless job with a sanding belt. Baggys is back open now in full force. If y’all need contact info for the shop feel free to pm me. I’ll be in the shop a lot next week and will be happy to help any of y’all with whatever work needs to be done on wheels

The prop in that photo is stock 3 blade. Yeah Eddie doesn’t have my prop looking great either. It performs well but not clean like Baggy. I will be bring this three blade to baggy soon and I light bring my 2 blade soon too

What all are you getting done to it and what kind of wheel is it? I’ll be in the shop all day Tuesday and I’ll be helping push out some of the mud wheels.

You found out what he is getting done?

BPS Big Blade for a GTR 40. Balance and sharpen for sure, probably needs some cupping added. I included a typed note with info on the boat, motor, speeds, and RPMs. This is the first prop I've sent to get worked, so I'm new to what to ask or expect.

Those are some serious speeds !

I was going up and down river with a brand new stock 2 blade and the best I could hit was 27.5 for a few seconds. Granted it was very windy and a nasty current. Great speeds, good write up!

Thanks. So it looks like you opened up the area just below the shaft when you cut the skeg. I don't have a pic of my prop, but it's just got a slight ding from hitting a boulder. I got a new 2 balde that I puit on last season and this dinged one is just in my barn so I figure it'd be good to get balanced, etc and then I'd have a spare.

I've been talking to wchauvin about sending it in to Baggy.

A small ding can cause enough vibration to cause ongoing issues with your motor. I would get it balanced ASAP. Unbalanced props cause little things to happen.

I appreciate your advice. Sounds like Baggy is the guy for this too?

I really like to have my 3 blade on when running my jug lines or crab nets. It is so smooth at low speeds and can run on step smoothly at just 9 mph. It has a great low speed idle.
